Diesel Dilemma

Thinking of purchasing a diesel over the next few weeks for my son, here's a short list of his favourites so far.
Not in any particular order, but the BMW is his preferred choice at the moment, whereas I like the Scirroco .
All the ones we looked at came with the 2.0 turbo engine.
Any opinions appreciated,. Thanks.

If I were choosing off that list I would go for the Scirocco. I think it looks the best out of the 4 (well I am a woman, sorry ). I prefer the looks of the coupe to the hatchback on the BMW 1 series but it's RWD so I wouldn't entertain it for that reason in the winter. I don't like the looks of Golfs or A3s hence leaving the Scirocco.

I've never driven any of them so can't comment on the driving experience but my sister did have the 1 series convertible which seemed quite comfortable when I've been in it.

hi mate scrub the roc :thumbdown: and the audi dont like the roc and the audi only looks its best in s-line spec leds/xenons....etc sports back is the best looking A3 THE AUDI se only has 150 bhp


The golf is is it GTD..???AND BE CAREFULL theres the new golf coming out in feb/march

The beemer i like especially in Msport guise the new facelift has improved the the bmw shoe/boot :lol: rather well 2.0d pumps 140 bhp aprox the golf 168bhp

I would go for the beemer if its a 3 door and with bi-xenons as the new led drls on the new bmw's are rather cool to say the least the golf doesnt come with a lot of spec i was looking at leasing the GTD WITH LEATHER/DSG £289 a month but the new golf is soon to make a appearance

and bmw 1.8 litre diesel is a peach :thumbup:

I'm a big fan of the Scirocco but the diesel variant is woefully underpowered. I'd seriously look at the new Golf GTD which arrives soon. It's a cracking car!!

I have to say that on looks the Scirroco wins hands down, and in my younger crazy days used to have the old shape Scirroco Storm, I just loved it .

Didnt realise the BMW was rear wheel drive, thanks for that K. :thumbup:

Sales guy told us the A3 was 2.0ltr :eusa-think: But he was about 17 with a false tan and a runny nose. :?
I think as for looks out of this bunch the A3 is a bit of a Shrek.

As for the Golf well a bit bland to look at I thought, not sure if was the GTD Jass? Badge said GT Sport and it was a 2.0ltr turbo diesel.

I cant afford to go brand new so we are looking at around 2008 up to 2010, the ones we seen were all around the £10000 mark in good condition and all one owner.

Getting back to the Scirroco, I've heard the same as you Rizzo, bit under powered in the diesel.

I think it's going to be a BMW as my son is tending to sway that way, but it will be the hatchback not a coupe.
Just gotta find one thats not been around the world, in mint condition with FSH, one owner, white and M spec.

And a salesman (salesperson, sorry K) older than Harry Potter .

unbelievably the Golf was the cheapest to insure, I can get insurance for any of the above cars in my sons name, and he's only 21, for less than £600. I struggled to get insurance last year for him for less than £1000 for the Astra.
Then again when he passed his test I paid £3000 for insurance to get him behind the wheel of a 55 plate Corsa SXI
And that was in his mothers name and him as a named driver only............. I feel dizzy just thinking about it :crazy:

I enjoy researching new cars and going out looking at them but as you say most salespeople these day only look 12. Maybe it's a sign we are getting older

One thing that is a bit confusing with the 1 series BMW is the badging .
For instance when searching on the net, the 118D is showing as a 2.0ltr but so is the 120D :crazy:
The 116D comes back as a 1.6ltr which makes sense, but I cant work out the badging on the 118 & 120.

Even on an insurance search both the 118D & 120D show as a 2.0ltr.

I would of thought the 118 was a 1.8ltr , the 120 was the 2.0ltr , but apparently not :eusa-think:

The 118d& the 120d are the same engine, as is the 123 d .
They are just tuned to deliver different power levels.

You can also take the one series with an option of 3 seats in the back.

I can't find any other "real coupes" with 5 seats?

I've been told by many people to go for the 118, so it's that one we are doing the most searching on.

Problem we are finding is that the 1 series seems to be a popular choice for companies, so theres hell of a lot of ex lease 1 series on the market.

I nearly had one for my last company car so did do a lot of research at the time.

118d 143 bhp
120d 177 bhp
123d 204 bhp

All 2 litre.

I went for the new 520d in the end as I have 3 kids.

Its for my son though so should be adequate, as his Astra is 140 BHP at the moment. But thats a petrol :eusa-think: .

Yeah your right I cant see many dealers wanting to part with cash, and If they do it would be peanuts.
Like I was saying to Jassy, the plan was always to pass the Z onto my boy after 2 years, we did this with the car he's driving now, the Astra Sri, it made sense to pass it onto him as it was and still is a good low mileage car, and as you know you always lose out part exing a car even if its in mint condition, so for us it was an easy decision to give it to him and the same was going to happen with the Z.

The thing is he's now got a job that involves a fair bit of commuting and basically he really does need a diesel, yeah he would love the Z but after a few weeks of still coughing up for petrol the novelty will soon wear off . Also on his weekends off he does training and a lot of going out with his mates and they all use each others cars to ferry the each other around, an impossible task in a Z. It would just be used as a show piece rather than something practical.

So heres MY the latest "plan".
Either sell the Astra privately or part ex it for a diesel, probably a 1 series BMW. So that's the boy sorted.

As for the Z, well yeah that will be going soon I think, probably try to sell it privately at first. It just does not get used enough, only 6000 miles on the clock after nearly 2 years, again it's not really practical for our needs. Fell in love with the idea and all common sense went out of the window, love eh !
We tried getting the mother in-law in the back the other week to take her for an hospital appointment, we gave up after 10 mins and plonked her in the front, even with the wife in the back it was a joke. I think that was the day we realised it was time to part company with the Z, and really is the only reason, not practical and so not being used enough.

I fear though that I will be taking a big kick in the danglies when I finally sell the Z, especially if I'm forced to part ex it . :thumbdown:

Heres the WIFES plan.
She think's that we can get something more practical for us and "hold onto" the Z, so that the boy can keep it and use it as "his best car" . :roll:
A very short and simple plan :wtf:

We have a drive that fits 1 car, at the moment we have 3, she wants to get a 4th. Do the maths :helpme:
I think she'll be next needing an hospital appointment . :lol:

I dread to think what the insurance would be on a 3 Series M performance with 3 turbos , for a 21 year old male. :crazy:

Forget going to Direct Line, it will be "direct" to the bankruptcy court for me .

jactac i hear what your saying on how often the z gets used ..ours will be 3 years old in may and only done shy of 9k ...so i dont know what to do next ....although weve had no real probs ime a bit concerd what to do after 3 years !! i read about timing chains / oil leaks / shock mounts ect and i dont fancy those bills dropping in my lap :helpme: looking from the outside in ...could you not put the z in against a better reg or new bmw ..and keep the astra !! as you then have a good runaround for the wife and the use of a best car if you need it (if the lad will borrow it you ) likewise the lad could use the astra if going out with the lads and then have no real probs with leaving it ... just another opinion to confuse you !! hope you work it out .....have a good new year ... :beer:

Trading in the RCZ for a new BMW and keeping the Astra is another option, only problem there is, the boy will be bees knees in his new Beemer, the wife will be happy in the Astra and me, Billy No Mates will be left sitting in a dark corner with just my favorite pic of Cheryl Cole.

You do hit on a valid point though Mel, that being, cars such as ours that do low mileage, and yet the end of the 3 year warranty will come before the car has done any significant mileage or put any wear on the parts like the timing chain tensioners or shock mounts ect that do seem to be problematic on the RCZ.
Like you say we could be in a position of having an RCZ that has done very little mileage yet is out of warranty and then develops what seems to be a common fault.
