I downloaded fw 42c
The car says 42.01 is this 42c?
Could it have worked and said it hasn't??

The version id contains n42c and 42.03, so looks like it didn't update.
I am not sure whether you can upgrade directly to n42c or whether you have to first upgrade to n42b and then to n42c.

Received the updates this morning Neilgsxr69 thank you.
Now the bad news. I've tried 3 times with them and keep getting error 0x17.
Which with my rudimentary PC experience is a bad hard drive.
Hmmm.

It might be worth a try re setting the system while the disc is in the slot, when the system re starts it will read the disc in the slot first, and maybe...........

That could well be your problem :eusa-think:

Should be easy enough to source a replacement cable, & then you can start all over again :eusa-whistle:

I think the problem is its had a zap. All the the connector is black and charred I swapped the one from the CD drive and it boots and runs but shuts down and dithers about..
So is that because the connectors are damaged, or because the HDD is caput?

It does sound suspiciously like a HD failure.

If it has had a zap, HD's notoriously don't like that kind of thing.
If you can get hold of a new cable to just try it, it might be worth while going down that route, but I don't hold out a great deal of hope.
Maybe you could find a techie that could run a test on the HD for you, perhaps a computer shop. If it's dead you could try and see if it's viable to replace the HD & cables, or if it's just a scrap and replace the entire unit.

The problem with a new HD will be that it would require the root software installed before you could update anything.

You might have to find a main dealer that could help out, although they're not exactly famous for that kind if thing.

Good luck

Ha, not sure I fancy that.

I'm going to have a word with a chap I know.
Runs an audio installers shop.
They retail and fit Becker/Harman. Hopefully he knows how easy parts are to get.

The HD should be accessible via PC. If I'm not wrong that system is linux based.

Bit of a long shot. Is the RT6 unit a lot different to the NG4 with regards connections?
I know the unit looks different but there are quite a few reasonably priced RT6s on ebay.

Anyone any idea what an aftermarket unit would do to the flip up dash display?
Would it be blank, or just show minimal information?

Sorry to keep pestering :)

Well I don't want to jinx it, but a breakers have been in touch to say they have a nav unit for an RCZ. £300 delivered with a 3 month warranty.

I hope it is an NG4, I've sent them a picture of mine just to be safe.

Fingers crossed

Ok, so.
Despite it being an NG4 from a similarly aged car apparently because the serial numbers on the label aren't the same I can't have it...

I'm thinking the closing lines of the email :

"I spoke to my colleague and I understand these are very rare and expensive units to get a hold of"

Means "We've cocked up offering it to you for £300, it's going on ebay for £800 instead. So I've been told to tell you any old bollocks"

So that's a first. A company telling me I CAN'T have what they're selling. You'd think they'd be falling over themselves to sell stuff!

Anyway, how do people go about buying these units to upgrade from a lower spec one...
