Selective quotes

Now that really is cheating. It's cheating! It's one thing to invent a quote but quite another to alter an invented one. Me thinks in this game that there ain't going to be any winners?

Basically it seems to have 50 folders or maybe files each of which contain a various number of randomly selected (by it) tracks so all that I can do is choose F! - F50 and it will play whatever it has in there.

Have you tried to create a playlist in iTunes?

Dont know how you can create a playlist on the move though (from inside the car, still have a month untill i can experiment)

Manelin, my son suggested simular to what you said.
He cant understand why we would want to use an ipod or a simular gadget when we can transfer thousands of tracks onto the NG4 into files and folders of our choice that can be named whatever we like and selected whenever we like, in other words just use the NG4 like an ipod ect..

I know that the music i have transfered i can select any album or track from that album just like i would on an ipod. The system gives you the opportunity when doing a transfer to keep the original name to the track/album or change it, so that you can select a track from name or album or both.

We had a play with it yesterday and had tracks playing through the Ng4 from an ipod and all the names of the tracks were showing on the Ng4 screen, so we could select whatever we wanted to hear on the NG4 but it was playing from the ipod. If you wanted all your albums to be seperate then all you do is create a playlist in something like itunes then transfer that to the ipod then onto the NG4 into a it's own file or folder, i found that when we plugged the ipod into the NG4 it starts to play automatically and then asks if you want to copy the playlist. We chose not to copy but just selected various tracks as you would if using the ipod on it's own.

But like i say we think the easiest way to play music is to transfer your "stuff" to the NG4 into it's own folder or file and then create your own playlist on there.

Hope all this makes sense :eusa-think:

PS. i say "we" a lot here, in fact i just sat next to my son pretending i knew what he was doing. but he did have it all doing what it should do from an ipod.

Ok. Ok my next admission may help Manelin understand what is going on here so that maybe he can tell me what to do to get what I want out of it. When I originally connected my Ipod to the car I think that it may have set on "random play" now I do recall the car asking something about changing names or something. Not knowing what it meant and not wanting to effect the tunes on my Ipod I said no. The other thing that may help him is that when I select the USB output via the media button it comes up as Ron's Ipod. Not sure if it gets this from what I called my Nano on Itunes or if I have typed this into the car. Please excuse both my ignorance as well as my memory on this subject. I am on hefty medication falling a couple of heart attacks and they play havoc with my recall. But something is tell me from what you have wrote that my car has a playlist from my Ipod and is selecting randomly what to play. As all that I can choose is one of fifty Files/folders and see what it has stored in there. I do not use the Ipod in car as I tried to resolve this issue and sat for hours while I downloaded the contents of my Ipob into the Jukebox thing ensuring that the ipod was set for Artists, But it does exactly the same. Plays what it wants from it's 50 files. So I took Ipod out of car and have so far settled for not being able to listen to what I want but to what Pearl wants me to hear. It's all my favourite stuff but I would so much like to be able to select my music to fit my mood/situation. Second to my wife music is my love and this situation is one hell of a compromise.

Ron,
the system is and will play anything you plug into it automatically , so if you've named you ipod "ron" and you plug it into the usb then it will start play whatever is on the ipod and show its name on the NG4 screen.

Now if your songs on the ipod are in a play list format, the NG4 will play them in whatever order or playlist you have saved to your ipod. Basicaly the NG4 is only showing whats on you ipod and the way you stored them on your ipod.

If you want to transfer stuff from your ipod plug it into the usb (it will start playing) select transfer files on the NG4 it will then ask about name change and if you want to copy all files, this is where you can change / save a playlist that you want on the NG4.
Thing is if you've saved all your songs on the ipod as one big file then thats what the NG4 can see, one big file. you will then have to select each track that you want to save to a "folder" on the NG4 and rename it whatever you want, something like "rons favourites".
I put a load of mixed tracks in one folder and just call them "mixed", so now when i select jukebox i have a number of real albums and my "mixed" album.

I think the prob here is the way you have saved your music to your ipod initially, perhaps not as playlists but maybe you have just kept adding songs without createing seperate playlists.

Tell you what, fill the tank up and have a nice drive down to sunny Swansea and my son will sort it, only prob then though is that when you see Baby Opal, you will want to change over from Pearl.

I do not know what a play list is so no I have just added my cd collection onto the computer and then downloaded it all onto my Ipod. So are you saying that I can't choose my music and that I have to allow the car to choose it for me?
I shall treat the last line of your post with the contempt that it deserves.

Not too much point going too far to sort this problem out on this car as it will be going in September. But I will not connect my Ipod to the new car until I know how to do it properly or am in Swansea. But if a simple fix is possible then that would be so good

The simple fix is ;
copy your favourite songs onto a memory stick, then copy that data to the car and put it in a folder in jukebox called "Rons favourites"

Then you can play them whenever you want in whatever order you like, you can even repeat play or shuffle so that they play in a different order each time.

This is what i do, just make up a list of tracks that you like and copy it to the car as one folder.
Dont forget, this Ng4 system can hold thousands of songs in seperate folders, so you will have plenty of room.

Ron if it's any consolation, i've just been told by my personal media expert (the boy), that the NG4 is not the easiest system to master, the softwear is not fully compatible with some ipods so you have to fiddle a bit with files and so on i think.
like i said earlier he did it all for me, i just sat there sucking on my thumb.

Sounds more like pornography to me. But that might be due to just finishing off a bottle of wine and the time of night
