I wouldn't touch a cat D regardless of any discount or assurances regarding the repair of the vehicle. There is also the added complexity of gaining insurance for the vehicle. Many insurers wouldn't touch one with a bargepole and those that will charge quite some premium for insuring it. Good luck to you and I applaud your enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. However, I wouldn't touch your latest venture as a vehicle to own and drive.

I will agree to differ regarding ownership of Cat D vehicles.
I dealt with this type of vehicle in an official capacity for about thirty years and am also an Advanced Driver.
I have owned and driven so called 'write off' vehicles from minis to top of the range Mercs for over fifty years having always ensured that they had been repaired by a specialist company. Never had any problem getting Insurance but anyway, it would be foolhardy to buy any car without first ascertaining full Insurance cover availability.
Some like Cat 'D'. Others do not, mainly through misconception. You pays your money and takes your choice.
This particular car will sell for about 40% less than a non recorded car in the same condition. It's buyer will eventually sell on for about 20% less than market value. This is fact.
I will pay for any AA or RAC inspection. Pay the deposit to Drizzle (with his permission, of course) and If the resulting report finds any fault whatsoever, minor or otherwise, he can return your deposit at once and in full.

Having recently sold a 2011 Auto Peugeot RCZ we were surprised to receive the following letter of complaint from a beautiful blonde lady customer.

Dear Sir,
I wish to complain regarding a faulty automatic gearbox in a top of the range RCZ you sold to me. It drives very well in the day time but simply fails to move at night. This is despite the fact that I am very careful to place the gear lever in ‘D’ for ‘day’ and ‘N’ for ‘night’. Even when I use ‘P’ for ‘progress’ it still fails to move the car.
This matter came to a head when I was recently stopped at traffic lights.
A boy racer slowly pulled his ‘T’ Regd bright yellow VW Beetle up at my side. He looked across and smiled (or was it a smirk). He then pointed his forefinger ahead indicating his wish to race me before inverting the middle finger and directed it at me in a most rude gesture.
Knowing my RCZ could burn him off the road I took up the challenge. I revved up to 4000rpm and thrust my gearlever into ‘R’ for ‘race’ just as the lights changed to green.
I write this letter from my hospital bed having just read my police summonses and letters from the legal representatives of the four drivers that were stopped behind me at the time. My beautiful car is written off.
I will be placing details of this complaint in the hands of my solicitor and you will be hearing from him soon.
