The whole TT / RCZ thing is a personal one.
When I bought my first RCZ it was between the Scirocco / TT and the Pug. I had not affiliation with any brand coming from running multiple MGs
The VW was better to drive than both the TT and the RCZ but it didn't feel any different to a Golf and for £25k it just didn't tick enough feel good boxes.
I had my heart set on the TT to be honest. In Aberdeen everyone has an Audi on one of their finance plans as that seems to be the way to do it so I felt pretty confident that going to a dealer with the money in my pocket would see me set for great service, brilliant attitude and make me feel like the whole customer experience was working for my money. I was just 23 so it was a massive amount of money to spend on a car.
Into the Audi dealer after the test in the VW my favorite driving shoes on, nice jeans and shirt. After walking about looking in the showroom I was approached by a sales man and told him I was interested in buying a TT.
"Im sorry we dont have any used ones in at the moment"
No Mr I am looking at a new one... confident that saying that would suddenly garner some respect.
"Oh, well how about we check the finance figures and we can take it from there shall we?"
No Mr.. I want to BUY a TT.... I was really wanting a test drive to see which one would suit me best
"Sir.. Its an Audi"
That was the final stop for me at Audi. Where I grew up, Vauxhall was known as the Asshole - not anything to do with the drivers - everyone had one.
In Aberdeen its Audi. The pompousness and disrespect of that seller to someone that wanted to give them all that money was staggering and a real reality check of what badge snobbery actually is.
I travelled 2 hours north to Elgin to check out the RCZ after seeing it in the Top Gear magazine and the guys there were so so friendly, I was handed the keys to the Ex Demo 200 GT for THE AFTERNOON. No passengers, just me and the car.
And I was sold.
A little courtesy goes a long way. Even when I had my timing issues on the Launch RCZ, the garage was really good at fixing it.
Would I buy an Audi now? Yes. A used one. They are really good, solid cars - the Saloon S3 and the A7 have a certain allure to it.
I still think I made the right choice. now onto my Second RCZ it still gets a second look from me every morning before I go to work, a nice fuzzy feeling that I have a car that I love to look at and have learned its little nuances when driving. A comfy place to be that's as pleasant hooning around the west coast as it is sitting in traffic. The feelgood factor is still there nearly 4 years on from the first test drive.
