So a garage screwed up my car by doing a full service. They put in Ow30 and immediately I noticed the engine sounded different but not in a good way. And its got a leak from under the oil filter. Wasn’t there before. I could cry. I had my RCZ running beautifully, smooth as silk and a pretty silent engine. So silent that people thought my engine was off not on. I prefer Total Quartz Ineo 5w30 low saps 3. Mine is a 2011 THP 156 engine and I live in NW England. Winters don’t get colder than minus 5 C and summers generally 21 - 24 if we get a summer. I had new timing chain, tensioner, guide, rails, aux belt, HPFP, water pump, thermostat all replaced a few years ago and have only done about 8,000 in 3 years since. Now the engine is ticking, and I suspect the timing chain hates the 0w30 oil because its too thin, and now there are drips under where the oil filter housing is situated. I’m now going to get another complete oil change and new oil filter etc done with a different garage and insist on Total Quartz Ineo 5w30 and see if that helps. I’m sick to death of being messed about by mechanics who know shit all and do shit all

I put Total Quartz 9000 5w40 and the engine runs smoother and quieter. I change it every between 8k and 10k kilometers.

When changing the oil filter, it is normal for a little oil to drip underneath, it does not have to mean that there is a leak.

I know but no there shouldn’t be a constant drip beneath the oil filter housing for months after a service!

The amount of focus people here put on oil and oil brands is crazy.

Put 5w30 (even off brand is okay) inside and its fine. Difference in viscosity between 0w30 and 5w30 will not take engine out of timing and wont make the engine tick. It wont help you preserve the timing chain, etc. Engine will tick if there is not enough oil in the car, so I would first check that. If you had service months ago, and your car did not have a reconditioned engine, you're probably burning through oil like any other THP engine. Have you checked the oil level?

Its a 10 year old BMW engine, not a hypercar.

A big problem currently with THP engines and many others is that the oil does not last the 30,000 km that the manufacturer says.

Even worse in turbo engines that degrade the oil more.

The 0W-30 Total ineo first is the oil Peugeot now and have for some time recommended for the THP, due to it been thinner it protects the timing chain on cold start up because it gets round the engine quicker it definitely won’t have done your engine any harm and I wouldn’t have thought the viscosity difference would make leaks appear.

Peugeot changed the intervals for the THP from 20K miles to 10Kmiles or every 12 months but needs doing every 6K I would say

Do you think I don’t check my oil?! Seriously. 🤣🥹Yes I’m obsessed with checking the oil weekly and coolant and everything visually obvious on a almost daily basis.
I know the RCZ guzzles oil. No problem. However when oil is dripping out thats NOT ok! My RCZ is 13 years old. I only do 2,000 miles a year. I service it every year. If anything I think the oil level on the dipstick is too high for my liking. I know my car. I know every sound, I know every response, I feel instinctively when it handles differently, I notice when the engine sounds different and it responds at idle versus up and down the revs. I know my car. Thanks.

I know my car - and yet you waited months to raise concern about the oil dripping. All good.

? Actually I told the garage straight away but have been messed around, gaslit, had rocker gasket replaced and garage hasn’t done what it was supposed to but caused other issues back and forth without inspecting the oil filter and housing like I asked for. So I an takung it elsewhere. I value the replies from other forum members who have had similar issues and can provide helpful feedback
