I too have the piper fitted. I did a lot of reading before choosing, and as Mick has said, it seems to be a matter of personal choice, but I found that generally, it appeared that more people thought any improvement in performance was minimal, and that the piper was slightly preferred for this...

I have been quite impressed with Rain X over the years. You do get a better effect if you apply several coats, allowing each to dry first. There is also a product out which is a rainX screen cleaner and coating, but I haven’t found that to be as good. As for paint protection, many on here...
