Thoughts on demonstrators

Ladies and gents, got myself a new job and I'm looking for a nice shiny black RCZ 156 GT to go with it :)

I've been surfing the web and making a few calls here and there and I keep finding a number of demonstrators along with other options. What are your opinions on a demonstrator car? Anyone got any experience with one?

i had a demonstrator from Robins & Day in Nottingham with 2500 miles on the clock and have been v happy with it. I got it over a year ago. I managed to get about £2500 off the normal price, which at the time was a decent discount. I also got them to throw a 2nd year service and tank of petrol.

mine is also an ex demo-got a great deal and no waiting, the secret is to choose one with choice of colour and toys.
the dealer has them for an alocated length of time, then requires to sell them so you can really negotiate a deal.
lots on ebay.

It is now my opinion that demonstrators is the route to go down. Which is up until this year been totally against. So I will put both my train of thoughts down and you can pick the bones out of it and make up your own mind.
Why I never would.....
Somebody has loved a car enough to buy it, then hated it enough to get rid of it really quickly. So why, what is wrong with this car?
Or it's been a demonstrator and every body who has driven it has done so with the engine cold and thrashed the pants off of it to "see how it goes" So the engine barely out of the factory but has been thrashed for short runs by everybody and the gears and clutch hammered by people unfamiliar with it's characteristics.
Or as I now think....
Buy wisely and at leisure and save a small fortune.....
I like all the extras, but they cost lots of extra pennies (TO BUY) they are worthless when you want to sell it back to the dealer. BOOK PRICE says da de da no mention of all your extras (just hope you got your monies worth before this stage)
20% vat + OTR costs + Value of extras lost the moment you leave the dealer. OUCH
Take time get the right spec at the right discounted price and you'll still have 2+ years manufactures warranty for peace of mind

I'm of the opinion that yes you do get good savings on demonstrators but the downside for me is that you don't know what kind of life it's had, however short it may be, but probably will have been thrashed a bit.

Yes I know you lose money on new, but you can't beat a brand new car IMO !

My OH drove the demonstrator like he stole it, OMG, had me squealing and holding on to the door handle like my life depended on it. I had to drive it back to the dealers, VERY SLOWLY to let the tyres cool down! I would say that RCZ might have had a hard life!

But you don't own it and never will ! It's like renting instead of owning your own house.

I sleep easy in the knowledge that it's mine outright.

Not for me but there you go! I've never bought anything without being able to afford to buy it. Not paying out on credit or anything. Hell, I don't even have any credit cards, store cards, no nothing just my little bank card. It's the way I was brought up.

Apart from my 1st car which was a used car in 1993 when I was a student, the next 11 were all brand new, 8 of which were Peugeot's.

I would never have considered a demonstrator.... until now.

The situation, I was in back in May was having a 10 plate Pearl White 308CC GT that I no longer liked. The fact that it was off the road for nearly a month back in March with engine problems was the last straw really.

Faced with a £10.5k loss after 15 months of ownership I couldn't really afford paying £28k for an RCZ without being left with very little in the bank. Not a position I want to be in with the way the economy is the now. I found a 4 month old Amber Red RCZ GT 200THP that also had Integral Leather, Vision Pack and Solstice Black Onyx Wheels with 1200 miles. At £22k, the £6k saving made up for the £10.5k loss on the CC.

It meant that for £7k, I could go back to driving a car that I would enjoy again rather than enduring. What didn't help the CC was that it replaced a Nissan 350Z Roadster that I had for 5 years, a hard act for a 308CC to follow - and it failed

So as much as I would have preferred to buy brand new again, the demo route wasn't too bad and I have had no issues with the car apart from the mirror issue.

my father wasted almost £150,000 buying cars cash easily in his time buying new cars all being in the 80's 90's and that was a lot of money back then so i was brought the right way as well but at the end of the day he lost silly money.i have no debt barring my car RCZ1 none at all.as i have said before on this forum my rcz is just a stepping stone and i aint being disrespectfull to you or the car.it just suits me in this financial climate :( .

Jassy, I wasn't meaning you were brought up any differently. I wouldn't be that disrespectful. I just wouldn't consider any other option, it's just not me. Everyone knows that buying cars is a cash loser ( apart from if you buy a classic maybe) but that's life, after all, you can't take it with you :D

I bought an ex-demo with under 1,000 miles on the clock.

It meant that I could get things like the lights pack, fancier alloys, wing mirrors and still save a BUNDLE on list price.

on top of that the car was just a few months old when purchased so It was pretty much as new.
