The Timing Problems

Morning folks... Hoping to be back in an RCZ within 2 months. :thumbup:

Question i have is about the timing issues that were abundant in the 2010 / 2011 models. Have they been fixed by uprated parts yet?

Do we still think its a case of labouring the engine that causes the timing slip combined with running the cars on lower octane - read normal - fuel.

Im probably a glutten for punishment but I need an RCZ back on the drive ;) :beer:

Timing slip had to do with the chain if i remember right and afaik it has been fixed on new models (will confirm this just now, just need to mail a contact about this quick). Knock retard (timing pull) will prevail if poor quality fuel is used\sparkplugs are not serviced\air filters are dirty. This problem is not isolated to the RCZ but also the THP200 DS4 and even the Mini Cooper S and Cooper S JCW. I've not had timing pull issues in my THP200 in 35degrees C plus conditions or even during track driving by sticking to premium fuel (Engen Primax and Shell Nitro +). This is even at 1550m asl!!!!!!

If you know your THP motor needs special attention and look after it, it will give you with an abundance of fault free grin inducing motoring.

To be honest im used to the Rover K-Series so not scared of engines that need a little TLC it was just a shock when the issues raised their head after a few months on a new car.

Good to know that the chain issues have been fixed, ill be sure to check this when buying! Regarding the timing pull, that shouldn't be too much of a problem the first port of call for me and any car is a good service! so i'll hopefully be able to quell that before it rears its head!

Has anyone an idea of cost when its out of warranty? I do intend to take out a warranty though but for reference?

Buy a diesel Figo, save yourself the grief! Think of the savings if you're driving back and forth to WH from the 'Heid every day!!

Stacks of power and torque, wouldn't know that they are diesels and much improved MPG, so no dilema either :eusa-think:

Ill have a test of one... I do like my folks 163 HDi in their 407 coupe.. but - like all diesels i guess - its more wafty fast than eager to please fast

It's lazy fast. Put your foot down and it goes. No need for forward planning and dropping gears. Amazing power pack

It is the dilema I face! Also when buying used the HDI still seems to command a £1.5-£2k premium on a similar spec / similar milage GT200...

I intend keeping this RCZ for 3 years max and Im unsure if the fuel saved would justify it financially.

Regardless its a good dilema to have in reality! :lol:

Ron diesels in general have become far better l agree so have petrol engine's ie fuel economy,avrils new fiesta is diesel a 1.6 durateq it's a lovely car to drive but if you don't do the mileage it's not worth it full stop

This. Plus you need to factor in any additional service costs (for example, does the diesel need servicing at more frequent intervals and what's the cost per service compared to petrol?) And if a lot of your journeys are short then the DPF may clog up sooner from what I've read on the forums here.

My test drive was in a diesel (dealer didn't have a petrol demonstrator, it was due for delivery a few weeks later) and very impressive it was too, it changed my view of diesels as a performance engine. But I still went for petrol because I can't live with the limited rev range of a diesel, it doesn't suit my driving style.

ok, lets throw cost out of the window here as its likely looking at the figures it will cost the same over 3 years.

Which one would you rather drive?

I've always driven diesel and with the RCZ it is no doubt the most sensible and least problematic choice!
Servicing diesels is also easier because they don't have spark plugs and it only needs service every 30.000km!
The nice thing about this HDi compared to my previous Peugeot diesels is that this one does pull quickly into higher revs much more easily and keeps pulling there!
This is ideal for overtaking: just put it in fourth and you'll pull from 80km/h to 130km/h in no time.
On our busy Dutch N-roads this is ideal for overtaking multiple cars in one go in a safe manner.

I test drove a 156 and it felt slower than my 1.6 206. I havent driven a 200, but id probably have one now if I did lol. When I bought mine I was thinking about the mileage I do when I go to shows or on holiday, but over the year it would probably have been better to get a petrol. In this weather my car doesnt even get to a quarter of optimal operating temp by the time I get to work.

I don't do the mileage to warrant a diesel but I did test drive one earlier in the year and was quite surprised by it. Having said that I like the petrol engine and I don't find the 156 slow, far from it. In third gear, put your foot down and watch it go :)
