Hi Jactac

Never done Vegas but used Virgin 3 times to USA. First time they were spot on. Second time they had reduced baggage allowance and also would not put on air con on plane whilst we were boarding in Orlando (scorching). The last time we were delayed 16 hours in Miami due to a faulty artificial horizon in cockpit (nightmare).
We complained bitterly when we returned but they just said it was company policy to parts share with other airlines and they didn't have a spare artifical horizon to hand. My wife and I just both felt that they are a company that are not quite as good as they used to be but still charge top prices and ride on the reputation of yesterday.

To put this into context, this summer we are going to New York with American Airlines and the difference in cost is considerable !
Have you considered New York ?

we travel to clearwater every year with virgin and have to say they are one of the better airlines ..alot of there flights are non stop direct !! which cuts down travel time a lot .....i feel they are competitive in this market ...there are cheaper flights but they usually do stop offs and can take upto 19 hrs to get to florida

A friend of mine was mugged at gunpoint in vegas on his first day ......I never fancied it myself not being a gambler and all.

I never gambled there buy there is so much to do without it - it is still a big part of the city but there is a lot else there, plus it is only 2 hours drive to the Grand Canyon, and Hoover dam is on the way there too... Lots to see and do.

Seems you're a fan of the gulf coast of Florida then . Have you ever tried Naples which is a little further south of Clearwater ? I was there a couple of years ago and it was stunning. I could easily see myself living there :beer:

I then drove down to the Keys which was equally stunning and I would highly recommend it also :beer:

We have traveled with Virgin twice in the past, once to Florida and then last year to New York , they were good on both occasion in all honesty, but we don't mind who we fly with as long as the guy up front knows what all the buttons are for :?

The reason why we thought of Virgin for Vegas was that they seemed to be the only ones that offered the most info regarding the hotels on their website, however as a package deal they are definitely the most expensive. For 2 people sharing in one of the 4 or 5 star hotels, for 1 week in October, with Virgin can go from £2600 up to £3200, without food, then there's your excursions,insurances, transfers, ect . Plus some hotels still charge this "resort fee" on top again. Not really sure what this fee is for but it's seems just another way of squeezing more money out of the traveler. If someone can give me info on the resort fee that would be great :thumbup:

The hotels that we initially short listed were ( no particular preference yet) :
The Paris
The Luxor
The Venetian
However, after doing a "Google Map" and "walking" the strip, the Luxor looks as if it's a bit far on one end of the strip, and we would rather be more central.
The New York hotel seems to be more central and didn't have bad reviews, so that could be an option ?

We read loads of reviews on almost every hotel on the strip, and just like reviews written anywhere they are totally varied, even the most expensive hotels on the strip sometimes get the thumbs down. :eusa-think:

This may seem a daft question, but I'm not a gambler and therefor have only visited one local casino on a night out with the lads in Swansea, nothing fancy and a casual dress code (no jeans ), so what is the dress code for the casinos Vegas, bearing in mind most people there are on holiday, it may sound a bit daft asking, but I just don't want to pack my Tuxedo :lol:

Then again, I could do the James Bond bit and it may fend off an of those armed muggers that gadgetpuk mentions. :?
I better not mention that to Mrs H as she's a bit of a nervous traveler, she thought that fella Mickey in Florida looked a dodgy character . :lol:

There isn't really a dress-code as such - once you get down into the hotel lobby you are in the casino - you walk through it at breakfast time to get to the restaurants etc.

You can wear pretty much anything but I'd suggest probably jeans and shoes rather than shorts and flip-flops in the evening.

Luxor is a way out at the end of the strip. Paris is nice but doesn't have the range of shops or restuarants, venitian is huge and has a good variety of things to see and do, New York is the one I would go for from that list though. They have an awesome steak restaurant there too...

Not sure about the resort fees - we never paid anything for that. One bonus if you are 'gambling' (which doesn't have to cost anything really - even playing the slots you can do cheaply), you will get free drinks all night whilst you are gambling in any of the hotels...

The New York looks like a top choice then.
So if you go into any casino, and play on a coin machine or any type of gambling you get free drinks ?
Is this all day or just evenings, do you need to be a guest at that hotel ?

It's all of the hotels, and you do not need to be a guest there - just need to be gambling (or with someone who is gambling and looking like you might gamble at some point in the near future - pays to chat to some of the 'players'...

yes we are massive fans of the gulf coast we are over there this year for 4 weeks ..we have heard great things about naples and know friends that have been so hope to put it on our radar for this year :beer: it sounds like the gulf coast is also a place you like to visit ! if the green card was a lot easier to get we would be over there like a shot !!

Second that on the green card !!! We were told by a bar owner in Naples that its known throughout the US that it has more millionaires per square mile than any other holiday destination in US !! Don't know how true that is but the Main Street is really up market but not over priced too much. We were there in August which was their low season (too hot) and it was very quiet which suited us perfectly. :thumbup:

Anyway I,m rattling on aren't I so if you do get anywhere near Naples make the effort. It's well worth it :dance:

Well spotted. It is indeed one of those taken after the detailing.
