So through the ages and my many AWD cars that I have owned (also the fwd and rwd cars), people always make the mistake of thinking that one is better than the other, and its true and not true at the same time.
Each one has its pro's and con's.

I have owned Subaru's since 2000 up to 2014, 4 in total, on the Peugeot front I have owned around 12 or so, and some Fords, Vauxhalls etc.
2 of those Subaru's I owned (one from brand new) were very focused cars, and I am not just saying that because it was a Subaru, they were designed with a specific purpose in mind.
Now comparing a Golf R with the RCZ R is stupid as has already been mentioned, both are different cars, the RCZ R is a focused point to point car and the Golf R is (and yes it really is) a cruiser, if you want the focused point to point golf then you need the GTI.

Now i can see that this wont impress you golf r owners but having owned 2 Subaru STI Spec C's (the spec c stands for specification competition and had lots of goodies you wouldnt find on your average car, not on the golf r or the RCZ R, like a proper engine oil cooler and transmission cooler, no sound proofing, thinner glass that you could only get from Prodrive, that nice company in Banbury, and yes i did have to get one 800+ quid windsrceen from there), it was built to be a very focused car.
It wasnt exactly brimming with the top of the range gadgets like sat nav, traction control, esp and the likes, it lacked dead locks as those added weight, oh and central locking... it was pretty basic (wind up windows and you couldnt even adjust the mirrors from the inside, you had to push on the glass to do that), though my 2nd one had the creature comforts like passenger sun visor and electric windows, central locking and electric mirrors, this car was a total monster, not much could keep up with it in many departments (and yes it is a quicker car than the latest mk7 golf R, in gear, through gear, 0-60, 0-100 etc, and it handled better).
I wanted a change, I already had an rcz 156 gt which i enjoyed, I had a test drive of the rcz r and was hooked, it gave me nearly everything the Spec C did (slightly less practical due to the lack of doors), better fuel economy, it handles better (yes, fwd and handles better than a Spec C, damned amazing but ill be stuck if it snows   ) oh and its more comfortable, i dont hear all the stones bouncing off the underside of the car now.

So what does this have to do with the Golf R?
Well the Golf is quick, no doubt about that, the 4wd gives it the traction it needs off the line, in gear... with the dsg you are ok, it does all the work for you, its pretty idiot proof, 4wd gives you traction (grip) not necessarily better handling as Jassey pointed out (been there, know about that), being the better handling car, well its been proven that the SEAT Cupra R handles better and that the RCZ R handles better than the SEAT, on the road? I doubt you would ever get to push any to their limit but the RCZR made one huge point when I took that car from Lancashire to Berkshire (and I would have done that on a tank of fuel, 55 ltrs and nearly 450ish miles) something the Golf R or the Subaru would not have done, and for 6 hours I sat in the RCZ R (except a pit stop for the toilet), getting out at the far end i felt pretty refreshed, the Subaru would have tired me out and the Golf would have bored me to death ;) but that crap handling RCZ R kept me wanting more windy roads to go along.

Now slightly off topic, the guy who I purchased my first Spec C off use to do Subaru's in the UK before many of the importers did, he now does VW group cars (inc Bentleys) because 2 marques he likes are Subaru (abeit I.M. have pretty much killed them off in the UK and we dont get the JDM models over here which are far better but still have a dacia type interior) and VW's (Skoda/Audi/SEAT etc).
He drove that RCZ R and was seriously impressed with it, you are talking about a guy who sees more VW branded cars than most people (and drives them), if it wasnt for the fact he wants an Audi RS1 (if/when they come out) he would probably buy one.
FWD/AWD/RWD, never think one is better than the other.

Some interesting points and thoughts all round and Tony, I'd love to see some pics of those Scooby STIs (always felt that was a rather unfortunate abbreviation  ). If nothing else, we have all established that we love our cars and cars in general. I'd love to get you RCZR, Mac's Golf R, Jassy's Mountune ST and my J VXR out on a track and see how they perform. That would be an epic and entertaining adventure. However, it's unlikely to ever happen and lets just all agree, with no further measuring, that we all have huge...

love for our chosen chariots. You thought I was going to say willies...admit it. ;)

Interesting while this all might/might not be its drifted well away from topics typically posted in a Newbie section.
Especially when some of the posts seem to be justification on why they have bought a Golf R.

Shouldn't this be best discussed elsewhere

Have driven both and I know there's no comparison performance wise. But folks who've only got eyes for the rczr and only driven the pug just can't realise how quick da old golf really is. Sub 5 second car but oh well it just ain't a RCZ. Any word of ur posh vw showing up yet. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Hey mac :) my ever so lightly posher Golf R, how can i say this...Sporadically Awesome as so it should be...somtimes l worry how much my optional extra car cost  ,as jassy still cant get YET get used to that S-Tronic/DSG Gearbox..but l will get used to it soon, its only been a week, bit dissapointed as it did come with Conti's..and specifically WHEN OREDERING said no to these tyres but hey ho...Goodyear Eagles ASAP..but its my last new car got it for 4 years

Sorry rizzo 1 more post u tried launch control yet. They are bloody quick or what. Give it a few hundred miles the exhausts seem to get more raspier when they get broke in a bit. How does it compare with the Dagenham express u had before

Jass, we need a devoted thread to your new beast!! Why haven't we seen pics or heard much about it yet?! I had assumed that you hadn't taken delivery yet. (We also need to let this thread return to the OP's purpose I think)

Well, decision time has arrived and I've gone for the Golf R! As you can see from the date I first posted this decision has been thought through.

Looks wise nothing can touch the RCZ-R but the Golf R interior is much nicer and I personally think the RCZ's interior is looking dated.

Thanks for all the advice and i have a feeling my dealer will come back to me this week with one last attempt to get me to change my mind! (VW have said and I have it in writing if I change my mind they'll refund my deposit as they can sell the car no problem at all)

Your call dude. Each to their own.
:eusa-think: I don't see the interior as dated, but different people see different things in a car.
Enjoy

BTW one of the reasons why I chose the RCZ-R over any other car is shown here:

Production capped at 500 per annum globally.

Well I hope you enjoy your new VW, it shouldnt really be on the cards if you were after a coupe as its a hatch, as for the RCZR interior, yes I have a tendency to agree with you, it would have been nice if they would have given it the facelifted 308's interior but they kept it the same as the original, tbh I dont notice it unless i go between the 208 and the RCZR (its mainly the touch screen which is a vast improvement and the steering wheel where you look over it in the 208, way ahead of its time).
I know the golf drivers said half the stuff i put down didnt matter, but it does, having come from a car with 310+bhp (standard power btw even though 280ps was quoted), and awd, 25-28mpg was the usual on a run, the Golf R is better but not as much as you would think (vw's fuel figures have always been laughable), which adds to running costs.
Insurance is pretty similar on both the Golf and the RCZR, about 4 quid in it considering the RCZR is a few groups higher, and I dont expect someone to kick my front door in the the RCZR, the Golf.... it will be the more desirable car due to the fact its a little more practical.
Overall driving experience, the RCZR is near faultless, its not 100% perfect but you forget about that, its seriously good fun and you get a nearly fully equipped car for the price compared to the golf which is spartan in comparision until you throw another 8-10k at it.
I will also warn you about the tfsi engines, dont do short journeys in them, people will say the prince engine is bad for coking up but the tfsi's are seriously bad at it (well proven and documented), another reason I avoid vw, even though you cannot fault their build quality, reliability is another issue (long gone are the days of vw reliability, or german reliability in general). My Subaru's were all pretty reliable (then again they were all 2ltr engines and not the chocolate 2.5's) and I have had no major issues with the 12 or so peugeots I have owned (except 1 head gasket on a 10+ year old car which was easy to sort out).
Have fun with your Golf R, its not a bad car, just not for me v the RCZR (it was a no brainer actually for what i wanted).
Oh and dont let them tell you that awd will save you in the snow, it wont unless you have winter/snow tyres on (same with fwd or rwd), been there, done it.

Any turbo car can be easily maintained if you're sensible. Although some will tell you that modern turbo engines will withstand ignorance and abuse I would simply recommend good practice in warming up and cooling down the engine. That, regular oil checks and good quality fuel should maintain it without too many issues.
