Some interesting mods/touches on that one, not for everyone in my opinion.

That car has been around a lot. A 6 owner car with tacky mods isn't going to appeal to a lot of people. That plaque below the radio is offensive. It was on the car when it has been for sale before. I'm surprised the last owners haven't removed it unless it hides an issue underneath?

The cheapest possible tyres are fitted. One of the very first things that highlights a car has been maintained on the cheap. The rear tyre has went through two MOT with a nail in it.

I think that was the one with the holes in the front arch liners?

Was thinking along those lines Kerr, there might though be someone out there that likes it.

The plaque inside is on another level, I simply don’t have the words.

The blue smoke warning would scare me off that car. I'd be definitely needing proof that something had been repaired to stop that. There was an oil leak earlier in the MOT history.

The front brakes are the big one. Just about every R or 308 GTi that comes up for sale is needing the front brakes done. I don't think a lot of people have been made aware of the costs before buying the cars. People don't believe the cost of the brakes expecting Peugeot prices.

I've had mine for 5 years. Outside regular servicing I've had a few bills. I've had my calipers rebuilt and had to change the discs. I've had Ferodo DS2500 and EBC bluestuff pads. Bluestuff are around £160 and DS2500 £220.

My timing chain was replaced. That's about £800-1000.

My HPFP failed. They all do. There is a man on eBay that refurbishes them for £160.

My engine mounts were replaced. I can't remember what that cost.

The camshaft oil seal failed a few years back. I did get a real fright with that. The oil landed on the exhaust and the amount of smoke that came out the back made me think my engine had just blown up.

My alternator failed before Ch

Regarding the blue smoke, is the cause likely to be valve guides or carbon build up?

If so what kind of money would a specialist charge to refurb the head?

Is there a known specialist in the London/Kent area?

It could be anything that causes the engine to burn oil.

Unless the problem has been fixed and the dealer offers a warranty then the car isn't worth considering. You could be facing huge bills soon into ownership.

It seemed they were the likely causes after reading a lot of the comments on here, and if all the other bits mentioned were good I would consider one with that problem, especially as it's likely I would strip it down and do the donkey work myself.

Hi all,

Since being ULEZ'd I've been looking for a 200 but realised the R is within reach if I can get one at 10-12K, and have yet to find any reason not to buy one instead!
I came on the forum hoping to find the definitive buyer's guide, and expected to find a lot more problems with the R than I have on here, it having such high performance from a 1600 engine.
Any pointers will be welcome, especially if it leads me to a good R, preferably black!

Cheers

Al.
Unfortunately you won't get in to an R for that money, 15k plus if you can even find one that low.

my personal opinion on that particular R, is don’t walk away from it, RUN away, I wouldn’t touch it as you have been advised, blue smoke at mot time is a massive red flag, there are others available, you will thank us in the long run!!

good luck.

There is currently 6 Rs for sale. All are less than £15,000.

I know we want to protect the value of our cars, but £12,000 is a realistic price.

It will not get a very low mileage car with an impeccable history, but £12,000 will get a good car especially if you buy private.

Don‘t think it’s about protecting the value, not even sure what people think of as a good car.

To me though a good car is something where everything is done with a full service history, with a set of decent matching tyres, ding free bodywork and perfect interior and no mods.

You would be crazy to sell for 12k, an impeccable car would sell on its own merit, certainly above 15k, the ones for sale at the moment are not good cars.

That's why I was asking about the cost of sorting a smoking engine, surely you don't write a car off for it! Say if, the black one at under 10k had a lot of the other problems with brakes, fuel pump etc sorted, the cost of rebuilding the engine may be worth it, not forgetting the smoking engine is a great bargaining point!

Could be, but the point is that all of us who own an R know how bills can rack up very easily with the crippling eye watering cost of pug parts, honestly I have never known or experienced such prices in my lifetime.

Very very few 9-11 year old cars are genuinely going to have a perfect interior, be free of dings and damage, or not have damage repairs. Most older cars, not just Rs, that owners think are top condition are not.

Some people might be willing to pay good money for a top grade collectors car that they can't use to protect the value. Other people are happy to buy a good usable car. It is an affordable performance car.

The two grey cars at £13,000 and 39,000 miles look good cars. The private sale claims to have FSH, and looks as if it has all options including the expensive carbon fiber roof.

They have already reduced the price. If they do need to sell it within a reasonable time then they can't hold out for top price. The value that the trade will offer is very low. Book prices are shockingly low.

We have all watched the classifieds on this forum for years. Lots of cars, especially private sale cars, struggle badly to sell. They sit up for sale for months if the buyer wants a strong price. They get reduced and many end up with traders.

There was a few expensive Rs up for sale towards the end of last year and none of them have sold. If you watch Autotrader a couple of them keep popping up when the market is quiet. When a few come up for sale at lower prices they are removed again.

I'm as desperate as yourself to see the values of Rs go as high as possible, but I don't think it's fair to mislead people asking for advice on this forum.

If you spend £15,000+ on an R it will have to be a really good car and even then you'll struggle to recoup that amount.

Not desperate to the see values high, after all we are talking about a Peugeot here.

I think we all, are just trying to protect a potential owner from the potential crippling cost of buying a bad R, yes you can be good with the spanners but the availability alone of some parts for this bespoke car is scary, for example I believe now the headlights are not available!

I don’t think it’s about getting your money back on a purchase, I am just of the opinion that the cars for sale at the moment need money spending on them, it seems to be always at least the brakes. So if you spend 13k with the essential items like the brakes not done then total spend could spiral.

Good thread this, It’s always good to read different opinions about the R, I suppose that’s one of the benefits of owning one, maybe…

Huge fall in used car prices around 11% on avg..... in the last quarter of 2023 alone, apparently; thankfully I don't own a Porsche Taycan with the 00s listed on AT with their prices through the floor. In an ideal world come the Spring......Garage Queen R's will still hold/retain the top value circa £15K.........daily user/higher mileage £11-£14K......snotters as always circa/sub £10K. Given it's a small volume car and now 10yrs old prices will fluctuate with the usual buyer/seller variables/pitfalls; cost of living cheap PCP finance deals and inability to get/higher personal loan rates mean only a select few are going to sink £15K into a low volume Peugeot sports car.....

Brakes are wear and tear. I highlight them as they are unexpectedly really expensive. I do think Alcon should be forced to recall the brakes. They are not fit for purpose. You shouldn't have to rebuild or replace a caliper after a set of pads.

Hardly anyone of any brand is going to fit new brakes to a car prior to selling. Spending a lot of money on a car to sell is lost money. You won't recover the costs.

The highest priced Rs with very low mileage are on their original brakes. They've still got the issues to come.
Very low mileage examples with brakes with little wear still have brake discs and pistons corroded.

What do you think the £13,000 private sale car needs money spent on? FSH, clean MOT history and 8 months Peugeot approved warranty still running.

It looks a good example. Knowing what the book value of the car is they will still struggle to get £13,000 for it as a private sale.

How did it go when you tried to sell you car? Did you get much interest or serious offers?

I had my calipers and discs replaced on my car before my ownership but they have been on there at least 6 years, there is no 'visible' corrosion on the pistons and no issues with the inner disc surface or front brake issues; as confirmed by MD, local Tech and MoTs......using the car year round in wet and salt will cause faster corrosion and surely dry warm weather use more limited corrosion....so a low miler used in nice weather will enjoy a good few years with no need to spend £££s on brakes.

From reading around Alcon use their mild steel plated pistons in a lot of their applications Jaguar, Evo/Lancer, GTR etc, with a SS used as a premium offering (!?) other car groups have noticed that with not using car in Winter, not letting pads wear beyond half-way damage/corrosion to piston can be kept at bay.....many have had no issues. Given the stats of R's SORN'd over Winter it would seem most are still used year round coupled with little preventative maintenance etc equals issues.

That £13K grey one would get my money if it's as good as it looks!
