I'm having a bit of trouble finding someone to repair a kerbed Solstice - damage as per the attached image.

Tried Chips away and another local firm who both said they couldn't help due to the finish.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

|Hi Alan,
I'm surprised that you are unable to get your wheel repaired. I gave my rear wheel , quite a whack last year, incurring some severe gouges to the rim. I contacted a wheel repair franchaise, Smart ABC, of Caerphilly South Wales. (They inform me that they have outlets throughout the UK ! !). They called to my home and effected a repair and respray to the wheel, which I confirm was a Damm good job. The repair took approx 2 hours, and the charge was only£58.75......................
I dont know what part of the world you are situated, but it must be worth a visit to the Web to see if there is anyone near you

yep!, we have a wheel re-dresser comes to the office, he did an Audi TT's 19" alloys at £ 45 a corner, painted any colour you like, but he looked at my Solstice and said they need to go on a lathe

this is due to the two tone colour scheme on them, they are not a single colour like most alloys.

Also, I'm rather pee'd at the slightest nick results in this whole bubbling effect as the water gets in behind the laquer, mine look the same as yours.
and I'm pretty sure the rental company will want all 4 wheels sorting out when they collect it in 2 years time.

Design fault in my opinion.

Same with any wheel in that style though rather than a design fault. I know when we used to do this style of wheels to the JDM cars a few years back we just accepted it. We just accepted that If your likely to kerb then choose another style as they are a pain to fix!

Best thing you can do is get a heck of a load of protetion on your wheels post kerbing. even try to seal it yourself to prevent bubbles

Well, I've now tried a third place who also said he couldn't do it due to the finish.

Guess I will just have to keep looking.

well, now I have a "spare" albeit cracked, I can give it a go with some tools and equipment,

if I get a half decent finish, I can hand back the car with no fees to pay, just a slight guilt feeling to the poor owner next time around.

Diamond Cut wheels are notorious for being a. buggered if they start to corrode under the lacquered surface or b. you curb them. Its due to the process where they actually mill the top face down AFTER painting the wheel so essentially you have bare aluminium exposed, this is then lacquered but is generally not coated with a protective layer. With the standard alloys there is a thick protective coat, a colour finish and then the lacquer to finish the job off.

With repair work they have to blast the wheel to strip the paint/lacquer. If they just grind back the surface that is damaged, they run the risk of chipping paint of and causing further problems in the future, so essentially they would strip the paint/lacquer - grind or have the surface re-machined - re-pain and then re-lacquer pain in the bottom but can be done.

Well finally found a couple of places. One in Dundee who quoted approx £65 (assuming this does not include VAT) and one closer to me in Edinburgh who quoted £100 plus VAT.

Went for the one in Edinburgh - http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/Fil ... etails.php - as more convenient although they have have to send the wheel back to their base in MK to get done so 4 to 5 days turnaround.

Also had some (less serious) scuffs on the front left but at that price will live with them for now.

Remind me not to buy a car with diamond cut alloys again.

I said a similar thing after my last two cars. They too had ultra low profile wheels. If the wheels see a kerb they scratch! But then I saw an RCZ and.... well the wheels do make a car

Anyone needing their wheels done try "The Wheel Specialist" 0845 3021944 or www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk branches all over the country. My two nearside wheels were bad when I purchased the car secondhand got them done in Newcastle. Brilliant job, could not fault the job at all, cannot tell they have been done. Not cheap but good jobs never are

Anyone want to swap a brand new set of Black Onyx Soltice?

But Ryan you haven't taken delivery of your new toy yet. How come you are so unsure about your wheel choice. If they are the black ones with silver edges to them, then I thought the ones that I saw on cars at Coventry yesterday looked really good. Might have been tempted myself, but mine have 2k miles on them or off, depending on your view point and because the tyre fitter took the edge off of one of mine on Saturday

Kinda glad I kept the standard Sportilege wheels then! Might be easier to 'touch-up' when the time (inevitably) comes!

Hope so buddy ,
i've checked a few local companies out on the net and will pop over to them tomorrow, i think theres two of them that i think can maybe sort it out !

I know its not the end of the world, but for the last 6 months i've managed to keep the "baby" totaly immaculate, honestly its like the day Marcus presented it to me.

Oh well, it was bound to happen one day :(
