K&N Panel Filters - do they make it louder?

Recently bought at 156 and I've bought a K&N panel filter for it thinking that as well as boosting performance it will also raise make the engine note louder and turbo noises louder too (whistle a chatter from back pressure). That's what happens with most of the other cars I've fitted these to (older cars that is).

However, I've seen talk on the forum of sound insulating induction pipes and a specially created cabin pipe from the 200bhp model that routes induction noise into the cabin.

So - am I barking up the wrong tree with a panel filter? If I want to hear induction noise, turbo chatters etc, should i be going for a cone filter/induction kit like this one: http://www.forgemotorsport.com/content.asp?inc=product&cat=030201&product=FMINDDS3 and abandon the standard pipework and air box all together?

Anyone fitted a panel filter? Did you notice any difference in the engine sound? To you get any more noise from the turbo?

Before any suggests it, yes I do plan on replacing the exhaust system at some point (I'm after a bit of turbo noise in the mean time).

Yes, if you want noise the k&n wont work for you. Cai or cone would then be better. Just note, cone you will lose power if you dont place it correct as the car will be sucking hot engine air.

The sound insulating induction pipe you speak of is the acoustic exhaust note which is part of the sports pack and standard on the THP 200, I believe.

No, the K&N filter panel does not make any adjustment to engine noise.

All gt models now have the sound pipe as standard 156 and 200 the k&n does make a noise difference .

Mine's a 2010 156 GT. Is there an easy way for me to check whether it's fitted?

It wasn't fitted to all GT's and so no it won't be on your early model. It was reserved for the GT 200 originally

Yes, you're (mostly) barking up the wrong tree

At least for the THP200 the only difference is the blow-off valve, it blows more often/intense, probably because the pressure builds up faster. But without a direct before/after comparison you hardly notice it. Others won't notice it anyway...

For a _really_ better sound a different exhaust system is the way to go. RCZ-Performance is your friend here :)

Hmmm, I'm thinking a come filter (placed sensibly) is the way forward then.

Have a look at Mini Cooper S (R56) intakes... some very tasty kit there and can be adapted...

Just a thought...

Not going to work on the RCZ unless you make air come into the rear of the bonnet. But looks like a nice kit for that engine setup.

That still uses tge original air duct as well as the bonnet scoop on the mini so you wouldn't have to have 2 ducts really.

looks very tidy though! .... blank off the top with a nice RCZ performance plate and what a system you have!
