Hi All,

I do hope you can help me with a problem on my sisters RCZ. the car drives fine then all of a sudden it'll start to misfire, if the engine is turned off and then restarted it runs fine until the missfire returns with no specific pattern.

I've just had a diagnostic done and it's throwing up generic codes of P1336, P1337, P0313, P0300 and P0301 along with discovering that it's missfiring on cylinder one. When he went further into it he found that "cylinder injecting angle of phasing = 0 and cylinder injecter timing = 0. Clearly this is because thats the problem circuit so I've swapped over the plugs and coil from cylinder 2 to cylinder 1 yet it still missfires on cylinder 1. Oddly the missfire seems to begin when the cooling fan kicks in although this may be a coincidence, the fan does stay on for an inordinately long time after the engine is switched off. Do any of you good people out there have any ideas what the root cause could be?

It's got me completely stumped, when it runs it runs fantastically but then this problem kicks in which is so worrying. We'd really be very grateful for any help.

Alan.

Sad to say this sounds like the variable valve lift gear. If so, it could be the actuator - which is a relatively cheap bolt on part. It could also be the gear inside the head. If that’s the case, a new cylinder head is required, I’m afraid.

Sounds expensive, Pete, I'll have it checked out hopefully it'll be the actuator. The no1 plug is very burned so that would suggest a valve issue.

Well short of stripping the head off I've tried everything I can think of, the missfire has now become more regular whereas previously it only occured after driving for a short while. If I turned the engine off and then restarted it would be fine but now it's returning as soon as I restart. For the sake of what's left of my hair - helpppppp!

I think you can inspect things as follows:

Inlet ports - inlet manifold off, then endoscope down ports.

Variable valve lift gear - head cover off and actuator out to inspect gear teeth.

I recommend you apply the so called tune up method to the inlet ports. This method is the least invasive and least costly as nothing needs to be taken apart on the engine side.
Have a look here for reference when applied to my RCZ:

I would even pour some of the injector cleaner stuff into the tank and do some spirited drive on a wet dog day. I mean it. High humidity + spirited driving + some cleaning chemicals in the tank might help.
Yes, the engine is a direct injection engine, so none of the chemicals will flow over the inlet ports. But the humidity does its own thing to help disintegrate the residue. And the chemicals help to improve flow thru on the injectors. Those might also be clogged.

So the car is now off the road as the miss fire is present all the time now, I've decided to test resistance across each of the injectors to see if that's the problem. I've noticed that the airbox has to come out and access to the injectors is pretty limited, does anybody have any tips on how to do this before I set about stripping everything out?

The injectors are a very unlikely the source of those issues. They are pretty reliable. First, I would give them a proper cleaning and then see what's next. It is a lot of stuff to be removed before you get to them. And then it is always the question with an older engine, if they will come free.

Sounds like an engine coil as for variabile valve lift I would reset with obd reader to see if it comes up again

I would put a good injection cleaner from a specialist change all four coils and reset errors and see

I've swapped the existing coils around and still the miss fire persists on cylinder 1?
