I'd be the first to admit I'm probably as tight as a duck's ass with a plaster (my car is my one luxury!)

.... but BP are having a downright LAUGH charging 151.9p for Ultimate diesel  , I was over £70 to fill up this morning! Maybe I should have gone for the petrol model after all.........

... ah well at least I get almost 3 weeks out of the tank

Ahhh it's good to be a petrol head ;)

I believe that that is 6p/litre more than I paid last fill up. Mine generally just lasts a fortnight or 600miles.

I thought it was usually 5p or so Ron, but the BP's regular diesel was 141.9 this morning. I know they've got their swanky new head office to pay for but jeezo........

My car has not moved in the past week. Due to my procedure last week I have not been allowed to drive. Today is the day though, off to see the Quack and will be using Pearl2. Will see what they are asking for fuel as I pass by as I won't be needing any for a while yet. I still will not but anything other than branded premium fuel in regardless. If I can't afford the fuel then I'll do without the car.

Maybe the way to think of this is not how much it costs to fill the tank but how often you fill it or how much per month you pay for fuel.

Obviously, if you're doing the same kind of journeys and driving, if the fuel goes up you will pay more.

However, it does provoke the question about what the price differential needs to be to cancel the difference in achieved mpg. Again, this will be different for every driver, depending on their journeys and driving style.

Any thoughts out there

Long gone are the days that diesel was cheaper to buy than petrol. Thanks a lot government

So ...... (I can't be bothered working this out but....)....

Mile for mile - DOES diesel work out cheaper than petrol bearing in mind we get more mpg.

According to my trip computer....My HDi is sitting at 47mpg and I get 560miles per tank (and I've just filled up with 151.9p fuel), what does the petrol get?

You also have to take into account the fact that the diesel car cost typically 2K more to start with and that It will need a service more frequently too

I'm not meaning depreciation, cost price or anything though Ron ... Just fuel .....

Well, on my gt200 I get anything betwee 360 and 520 miles out of a tank, depending on journey length.

Typically on the weekly commute I would estimate between 380 & 420.

Mine one similar roads is currently sitting at 36mpg average.

I worked out I'd be cheaper with HDi so I assume your the same.. It was fractional tho!

By my reckoning, using the figures posted here, Donna is paying about 15p/mile & I'm paying about 19p/mile, based on me using Shell optimax @ 138.9p/l.

Provided our journeys and driving styles are the same, she would appear to be paying less and, therefore, diesel would still appear to be the cheaper option.

If I chose cheaper fuel at 132.9p/l I would pay 18.3p/l - always assuming, of course, I got the same consumption. - Still apparently more expensive than diesel.

To achieve parity I would need to get 512 miles out of a tank of optimax (I can get close on long journeys on good roads under cruise control at about 65 mph) or be paying about 109p/l (absolutely no chance in UK!).

While we're on this topic, some of you may be interested to know that I've been trying to keep meticulous fuel figures over the 6 months I've had my RCZ. While there can be dramatic differences between each fill up due to the type of driving between them, the longer term trend is gradually upwards, i.e. more mpg. I guess this the engine bedding down and I would expect it to 'plateau' at some point.

Is anyone else finding the same thing?

Did the same and found the same. Averaged an extra couple of MPG over the previous 5k miles

That's exactly what I was asking, thanks Pete!

I'm finding every couple of tanks, I'm getting an extra 0.5mpg here or there .... done 1900 miles ..... so I think mine is gradually getting better too. Think my 1st tank got about 42mpg  now I'm up to 47.0 for the last tank  . I'll be pleased to see her hit 50mpg, that's what I'm aiming for! My 207 HDi got 55mpg....

... oh and I usually use the 2nd trip calculator to average 10,000km (6215miles) .... mines at 44.7 for 1900miles but last tank average was 47.0mpg. I just reset that when I need to.

Interesting, although I'm not sure the on board computer gives the same results as a manual calculation based on the fuel added by the pump divided by the miles travelled.

My problem is there is no supermarket fuel station around me for 7 miles, so the Texaco around the corner can charge lots (which they do)

Lucky you. Saves you from temptation and avoids using inferior fuel.
