I ordered the KAHTER Blinking Smart Stop and tried to fit it but couldn't get it to work correctly (so much for the difficulty level only being 2 out of 10 - how stupid am I? 
).
I've contacted my local autoelectrician and he says that I may need a CANBUS relay at an additional £25. To those of you who have fitten one of these units, did you have to fit a relay also?

I did not have to fit relay, You do not need one.
Straight wiring job. I took a positive feed from the o/s rear brake light to the blinking smart stop unit. Earth it through the earth wire on connection from the third brakelight.
Still works fine 12 months on
