Had this crap again yesterday, just came out of the blue.

Check engine light on and limp home mode and car was shaking on idle and bluddering like crazy. Sounded like it only ran on 3 cylinders...

Towed it to the service workshop so they'll see what's up on monday. NOT HAPPY AT ALL! :(

The symptoms had been around in the R56 Minis long before the RCZ hit the showrooms. In America for example most MINI / BMW dealerships would replace the timing chain and tensioner as an "unofficial" official recall. In the UK and more so with the Peugeot family of cars there are a lot less written about the issue as most would still be fixed under warranty

If your out of warranty the job is about £700-£1000 depending on the garage labour costs. the parts needed cost about £200 so it makes up about 20-25% of the overall cost.

With my first RCZ (A launch GT 156) Peugeot UK didnt have a scooby and eventually flew over a Parisian technician to sort it out.

But now the timing issues which are inherent to the engine design should be the first place they check rather than the other bits which might simply be "bad" parts.

Its always more likely that its the timing.
I am out of warranty so i've got that going for me.....

Last time i got the check engine light on i suggested it was the timiing chain fault but they hadn't had a car or even heard of that this was a common issue with any THP engine.

I'd be looking for another garage mate

Just thought I would add my "ENGINE FAULT - REPAIR NEEDED" story into the mix (it's good to share after all!).

156 GT Petrol.

Been away for a week so she had been sat on the drive - drove her for approx. 3 miles on Saturday and was absolutely fine (apart from the odd engine rattle that is probably the timing belt issue a lot of people have experienced, but the garage cannot diagnose).

Started her up Sunday morning and without moving at all, up popped the dreaded message. Went out on the roads anyway (as we weren't going far) and she was still running as smooth as usual with all instruments reading as would be expected... no limp mode, no juddering, jolting etc. (Although in hindsight, the fan did over-run about 2 weeks ago - but I put it down to a glitch as it only happened once).

Called the garage yesterday, booked her in for this morning (they're only 1.0 mile away from home) and that's where she is now (apparently she was safe to drive!).

Diagnosis = faulty electrics on the water pump
Fix = new water pump

Do I think this is the end of it? Not really!

Glad I took out extended Peugeot Warranty? You bet!!

I'm another victim now, everything was going fine, then I got in the car to come home from work and as soon as I turned the engine on a beep sounded with the 'Engine Fault Repair needed' message. I carried on anyway and while driving the temperature needle would only go up to around 75 then down to around 25 and bounced back and fore all the way home. It does this now every time I start the engine and drive somewhere. As the post above the engine carried on as normal with no limp mode.

I've read that the temp sensor fault is when the needle bounces up into the red zone but this doesn't happen with me, so could this be a sensor problem with me except it's showing cooler than it should? Anyway going to ring the dealer tomorrow when I get the chance and book it in.

By the way I have a 2010 1.6 156 so it's well out of warranty now.

UPDATE

Garage called yesterday afternoon to say the water-pump issue had been resolved with a new water-pump and it was ready for collection..... oh, but there were a couple of advisories they noticed whilst carrying out their checks.

"There is a slight oil leak and an engine rattle that we are familiar with in these models as an issue with the timing chain. Would you like to collect your car and re-book it in, or leave it with us and we can do further investigations?"

Erm.... well considering back in May when I booked my car in for the engine rattle for the 4th time (just before the original warranty ran out) they still knew nothing about any issues with the timing chain / tensioner, and when I booked it in for the engine fault I made them aware of the oil leak, I suggested they might like to keep my car for an extra day or so!!

Do I think this is the end of it? Not really!

Glad I took out extended Peugeot Warranty? You bet!!

if you have kept up with servicing at a Peugeot garage you can buy extended warranty for between £200 and £300

The garage just called - they are running some "sessions" on my car before considering whether to start stripping the engine to get to the timing chain and tensioner. "Sessions" anyone?

Again I was given the option of collecting my car - again, I declined. Well, why stop now!

Looks like they are planning on having it "well into next week!"

Deep joy!

Thanks, I'll look into it. The car has been good to me though with no major issues. The garage will be picking my car up from work on Tuesday, so I'll see what they say then.

I've only just had my wheels refurbed to a different colour and had the aluminium bars wrapped and it's got to go in the garage now.

I had a call from my garage aswell last tuesday saying that the car had 3 faults.

One was a cooling pump for the turbo that was not working at all apparently.

Second was a coil/ignition thing that had failed so the car only ran on 3 cylinders.

And then the timing chain rattled so they were gonna look into that someday now to see what's up with that. Haven't heard from them yet tho.

The service guy said he was gonna call Peugeot's "head office" or something to see if they were willing to pay for the timing chain issue thing but i really don't have any hopes for that, cause never in my lifetime have i seen someone paying for that kinda stuff if they didn't really have to.

Whole thing sounds terribly expensive to me and im not happy at all :(

UPDATE

Garage just called to say that they have finally concluded their investigations (3 working days worth??) and I definitely need a new timing chain assembly and cylinder head cover (apparently the 2 are linked?)

But, they have been in contact with the warranty company (Peugeot extended warranty through Peugeot) who have told them off for investigating as they want to send their own sound engineer out to assess the vehicle before they will authorise any work / replacement parts for my car!! Even though it is a known fault.

So, my car is still at the garage and no-one knows until tomorrow what is going to happen next.

Even deeper joy!

UPDATE

I called the garage to get an update (I really would just like my car back - fixed!).

Good news - the engineer has been out and authorised the work under warranty!! The required parts - of which there is a long list apparently - will be ordered tomorrow (not sure why this couldn't have been done today!) to arrive Friday / Monday, so there is a chance I will get my car back mid next week..... which means it would have been there for just over 2 WEEKS!!!

Fingers crossed that this will be the end of this little saga!!

Re: "ENGINE FAULT REPAIR NEEDED"

I suppose, ultimately, at least it's bring fixed under warranty. To be honest, these timing chain issues should all be fixed free of charge if found to be faulty in my opinion. It's a widely known fault and I do think that Peugeot could have done something to resolve this long before now.

Keep us posted folks!

Right, bricking it now. Only got my car yesterday (1 year old GT200 12 k) and I noticed the fan overrunning for ages after I parked up, even though it wasn't hot out & I hadn't driven far. I must admit to not looking at temp gauge in car.

I have always been lucky with reliability with all the cars I have owned, but having read this entire thread, I almost daren't give it plenty in my car next time I take it out & let's be honest, that's probably why most of us bought one in the first place. (Along with the smoooooth looks of course). :auto-car:

Just hope my Z was just hot and that I don't see any silly messages or flashy light things on the dash ( at this point my level of mechanical knowledge may be becoming apparent) :wtf:

My only hope is that there are thousands of happy Z owners out there with no problems, and that all those listed on this thread are the minority.
Fingers crossed

The fan running for a couple of minutes after stopping is normal. Drive normally and enjoy the car.

I'm on my second now (GT200 for 3 years, followed by an 'R' since Easter). Not seen this problem on either. Bear in mind that a fair-ish proportion of posters came here specifically because they had an issue but they are a minority of all users.

By all means, keep an eye on it and go straight to your dealer if you are worried. Cite the well known issues of timing chain & temp sensor, supported by info from this forum and you shouldn't have too many problems.

A bit off topic an a plug for my blog, but to show my confidence, I'm describing my current road trip around Europe on http://www.rczr.wordpress.com. Feel free to check it out.

Got my RCZ back from the service today too:

Changed one ignition coil and cooling pump for the turbo. I forgot to ask them but is that an electrical pump or how does it work? Anyone know?

And then of course the timing chain thing. They only had to change the tensioner and readjust the chain then it was fine. Had to pay for it myself tho but the tensioner was only about 50 € so not so bad. Had they changed the entire chain they said Peugeot would have payed for it even tho i'm out of warranty.

Not a bad result Tomas!! At least it's fixed and you have it back. I'm interested to know about this turbo cooling pump myself. I've never heard of it either :eusa-think:

I think I saw you - on either the A12 or A1 in Switzerland. A Red british reg 'R' anyhow. I live near Bern, and am about to put my money down on one very similar!

Yes, it was me!

I was in Swizerland 7th/8th September this year.

You probably saw me on the way from Basel to Spiez on Lake Thun.

Which remind me, I really must finish the blog of the trip.
