Cheap Winter Tyres

Today was the day to have my tyres swapped back. So now on summer tyres again, Questions for the more knowledgeable members.

My invoice shows 4 valves @ £1 each & 4 balance @ £4.75 as these charges amount to more that the £3 each to change the tyres, I'm wondering was the extras really necessary?

As my car has the tyre sensors, I would not have thought they could have fitted new valves?

Why do they need balancing just because they have changed the tyre?

My bill was £42 inc vat to change all four how does that compare?

I'm a bit dubious about the valves but the wheels would need rebalanced. Changing the tyre can affect the overall balance of the wheel.

£40 is about right for swapping a full set I would say.

Yeah that's about the going rate for getting them changed at a dealership RON. You would need to get them rebalanced and I'd have been demanding that be done if it hadn't. Can't understand the new valves though. That wouldn't make a difference whether you had tyre pressure sensors or not but I'm discombobulated by that appearing on your bill.

For those who haven't swallowed a dictionary 'discombobulated' means disconcerted or confused. Great word though!

Now if still discombobulated as I don't know if you are discombobulated that it appeared on my bill or that they would have fitted a new valve. Can a new valve be fitted to my tyre pressure sensor or is the sensor and the valve a single homologous unit?

Ron, I suspect that it is one of those charges like 'sundries' which gets added on automatically. TPS valves are very different to normal ones and are far more than £1.00 each! You have to decide if getting the £4.00 back is worth the effort.

I will be going back there on Thursday as they are replacing my locking wheel bolts with standard ones. If as I suspect this was added to my bill as routine, then I would simply ask it be deducted off of the price of the new bolts.

Ron why are you taking off your locking wheel bolts and replacing them with standard ones? Won't someone be able to pinch your alloys?

My locking bolts are proving problematical in that they are becoming rounded off and difficult for me to remove and I don't believe that stealing of alloy wheels is rife any more? besides with the little plastic bolt head covering caps in place, no one could see that I didn't have locking ones and if they'd decided to nick my wheels they would assume there to be a locking bolt in place and would have come prepared with the correct tools.

Good point.

On the subject of wheel bolts, the new RCZ now has silver/chrome ones to match the colour of the wheels along with the centre caps.
Looks much better in my opinion. :)

Yes, I noticed that on the one outside the dealers the other day. I liked it a lot. If I still had an income, I'd have ordered a full set there and then, but alas

And they're off...finally. It's a serious piece of logistics to get these blooming tyres all ferried to and from the fitter in the RCZ!! Think I've done myself a malady trying to get the summers in and the winters out!!

Tiss easy Rizz my man. I've said before how it can be easily accomplished, in case you don't recall, I'll repeat myself. Empty out the boot completely. Release the front seat back so that it flops forward as well as sliding the seat forward as far as you can whilst still being able to see out of the window and into the door mirror. Then one Tyre into the wheel well beneath boot carpet one up front behind passenger seat and you will have ample space for the other two. Done it this way twice now.

Hard part. Emptying the boot

Cheers RON. My way isn't entirely dissimilar. However, if I move the passenger seat much then my vision is quickly obscured which I do not like!

It's that time for Flipper to change into her winter shoes. -2 as I drove out the road to the tyre fitters this morning. Eurch. Quite fancy hibernating this weekend!

So...while getting her winter shoes on we discovered that being forced to run on a flat for little over a mile until I could pull over has resulted in an alloy completely eating the inside wall and I ak going to have to buy yet another tyre!!! BL**DY HELL!!! :(
