I love your final quote. However, if it's a challenge then I accept. Prepare the duelling vehicles and pistols for dawn! Mind you, my confidence of this is based on my last car with winter tyres and, as you point out, it had a narrower footprint...not by much though. I can't remember the tyre profile but it still had 18ins alloys on it and quite a fat tyre but the vehicle itself was a LOT lighter!! (A 120BHP MK6 Fiesta Zetec S) Don't be fooled by the 500 though, it's utterly useless in the snow!! Something that I myself was surprised about but it's akin to trying to control a shopping trolley on an ice rink!!

Rizz your challenge is Accepted  driving in winter conditions is just not down to tyres its also down to confidence  i dont give a monkeys chuff about avrils car but you 2=Begbie&Ronaldo do  with your GAY rcz just as i would.you wont BOLDLY GO  A slimmer footprint does matter a lot, your fiesta never had 205 tyres OEM'S more like 195's as avrils have 185's just remember your car is as useless on ice with or without winter tyres

Sorry the last car was a MK VII not VI. Great fun car to drive. Like an oversized go kart and a great looking car when it first arrived.

Yup, I will be treading carefully but I'm pretty confident in my abilities...unless I hit black ice and then I'd be as well just getting out for all that I'd be able to do.

I was reading about their studded tyres last night.
On a similar note, what real effect would putting 235 / 35 / 19 toyos on instead of the 40 contis?

    I was £941 for 4 (fitted, balanced and inclusive of VAT!!) :( :( :(
How come? You sent me the link to mytyres.co that gave me all the details as to what I required and their price was £209.50 inclusive of vat. I got mine slightly cheaper @ £202.80 from a local tyre place.

I have just paid £852 for a set of 4, which is £213 ea. Got them shipped to a local independent tyre fitters. Balanced and fitted for £10 a corner. Only took 2 of the originals home, as they were new a couple of months ago. The other 2 were barely legal after 36,000 miles from new. Minus 6 degrees this morning and no salt on road, no sliding problems so far.....

Just back from a brief trip to Helsinki and saw an RCZ there having no problem at all driving on snow covered roads. No way to know if his tyres were studded or just proper winter/snow tyres but he (along with everyone else) was driving as if it was no worse than wet tarmac. The only sign it was slippery was a little wheelspin on pulling away but thereafter I was amazed at the grip they all achieved in straight lines, corners and under braking. Quite unnerving to witness at first.

Well we have had some pretty good snowfall and icy conditions hit Aberdeen about a week ago and I'm pleased to say that my RCZ did an awesome job with its winter tyres fitted. No slips, slides, loss of traction or drama. I took it over some untouched country roads when the snow fell and it outperformed my expectations at speed and under braking. I am so glad that I got them fitted and am gunning for more snow to fall!!

Well I for one am very grateful for the fact that I invested in winter tyres. Travelling along to work this morning, all seemed fine. It was -1 so milder than of late. A White van man overtook and duly lost control as he attempted to return to the nearside lane. First it twitched and swerved and then rolled over a couple of times and just for good measure somersaulted and ended up on its side. Scary for me as I too was "motoring on" but Pearl2 came to a stop in a straight line with the hazard lights already deployed
Whilst on the telephone to the emergency services a car basically turned left from the outside lane and ran up the embankment and too landed on its side. The lady driver came off better than White van man who was bleeding profusely from his head. His leg and arm were causing him pain too, whereas the lady was unhurt and freed by the fire and rescue service

The moral of this for me is that thanks to the car that I was driving and the tyres fitted I avoided being involved in an accident. I feel confident that without these two factors I too would have been involved. The road was like an ice rink. I had a job to walk between the van and the car as it was so slippery

Sounds like a very scary experience but glad that you were not involved and unharmed. I've heard so many stories today of cars overturning, going off the road, etc due to black ice etc.

Seems like the winter tyres might be an option to consider in the future. You and Mr Rizz are certainly singing their praises so it would seem money well spent :)

Wow RON!! That sounds horrendous!! Thank god that you and Pearl made it through unharmed!! RCZ1, they really are tremendous. There doesn't need to be snow or ice on the ground for you to notice the difference with them. You'll notice the difference in braking distances and grip levels as soon as the temperature falls.

Mind you, Jassy has me thinking about an Alacantra steering wheel and 38 strippers in my car now. Although the latter might be a bit of a squeeze. I don't mind doubling up though... ;)

What I would say to anybody that is considering keeping their car long enough, is that my winter tyres cost less than the summer ones  So whilst your more expensive tyres sit unused in your garage, the winter tyres are offering you so much more traction on the road. So reduced risk of accident (as in my case) and reduced chance of getting stuck in snow/ice.
All that you are doing is buying a full set of cheaper tyres in advance of actually requiring them. Assuming as I say you intend to keep the car long enough to get your wear out of them.
