A fond farewell

Well after 3 years I am finally saying good by to my 200GT RCZ. During this time I have covered 15,600m and apart from a couple of minor glitches with the rear crank oil seal failing and swamping my drive, the car going into limp home made (bizzarly as I was passing the dealership) and the rear view mirror falling off, the car has performed nearly faultlessly. It is has been serviced once and still has the original tyres which are still legal!!

I have towed my motocross bikes on it to events in Wales and used it as my runabout. My rolling average on fuel consumption over that period has been 34.8mpg. In terms of residual it made £16,000 in part exchange against a new car being sold to me at mates rates with little margin.

What I have liked:

Cool looks, even three years on it still turns heads. Surprisingly comfortable to drive and great road holding. Massive boot that gets all my motocross gear in with ease. A sports car that towed a two bike trailer like it was not even there. Very impressive specification as standard. I went for all the extra options as well such as JBL Audio and the Nappa leather. Efficient Sat Nav although it did take some time to get used to it and work out how to do the Speed Cameras. Nice slick gear box and clutch (although the clutch pedal position took awhile to get used to).

What I have disliked:

The lack of the stereo to be able to stream bluetooth audio which was standard on other cars in the range at the same time. The fact it dumped the engine oil all over my drive after a seal failure at 1800m. Having to get the mirrors replaced due to the water staining and corrosion. The internal mirror falling off in my lap as I drove!

It did not deliver anywhere near the claimed fuel consumption. However in fairness my type of driving profile probably never really gave it a chance.

I generally buy new for cars and never keep them more than a year so its a real testament to this car that I have kept it so long.

What am I replacing it with? Well I did think about the R but the problem we have is a 3 2 seat cars and a need to be able to carry passengers from time to time. So I have opted for the new Mazda CX5 Sport NAV 2.2 AWD. Something that has plenty of power, 4 seats and a huge boot as well as the requisite tow bar and delivers excellent mpg as well as all the Gucci gadgets the same as the RCZ.

I don't have a single regret buying the RCZ and it will be with a great deal of sadness that I part with it this week. But hopefully my experiences will benefit those considering the car.

:)

It's a shame no-one's going to look twice at the Mazda like they would the RCZ, you'll miss that!

I dread the day I hand mine back too :(

All the best with the new motor!

I can stream bluetooth from my phone. Is it just the phone that's the issue? Or do you mean from another device?

LOL, Jactac, I have lurked all this time...... ;)

The new owner will certainly get a good car. I have looked after it very well and there is still around 5mm left on the tyres so it will probably see around 18k on a set of tyres. That alone is very impressive.

Tomas-90 I have the NG4 Sat Nav System and it does not do Bluetooth Audio streaming despite numerous promises for a software upgrade to fix it. The unit was capable just the software did not have the facility.

I am just waiting for the Mazda to be delivered from the factory. The system shows that its on its way from Holland at the moment so should arrive any day. It was very difficult to find something as a replacement to the RCZ that ticked all the same boxes as the 200GT spec has pretty much everything I wanted in a car. The 2.2AWD Sport Nav is the very top model on the CX5 and has all the gadgets. Bose, parking camera, lane assist etc. Most importantly I can stream music from the iPhone and it has the removable tow bar. I also added some extras like boot liners, puddle illumination, LED DRL and stainless kick guards for the boot and door sills. That was pretty much all that could be added as everything else was standard. OTR was £29k so slightly cheaper than I paid for the fully loaded 200GT.

My only other parting comment was that despite a few early ups and downs with dealers the guys in the service department were always helpful and efficient. The sales guys are still a poor show. Had very little interest in trying to keep me in a Pug when I announced I was looking to change and then had the cheek to offer me £11k for the car!!

I know I will turn my head longingly every time I see an RCZ pass me on the road but needs change and I need the space.

Is it just me or is £16k partex for a 3 year old RCZ a fantastic deal? I'm sure the car has been well looked after and has lots of extras (as has mine and others), but that sounds really good! Did your mate give you a good deall?

Either way, the Mazda's a nice looking car and the kit you get on it is brilliant, so enjoy

I would say that £16k is a good deal. However it represents 48% of original price at the three year point which was about what was expected for the residual on it. The £11k I was offered by the Pug dealer was just an insult. Especially as they were retailing a lower spec car with standard mileage for £16999 on the forecourt!!

Sounds like someone is going to get a great car there when you finally trade it in. I hope your new car proves just as enjoyable for you :). It certainly sounds very well specced.

I have the same experience at my local dealer. The sales team are inept but the Service department are second to none. They really couldn't be more helpful.
Hence my decision to buy my second Z from a different dealer, who proved to be excellent but I still use my local dealer for servicing.

Do you have the NG4?
I don't really know which one that is  I've got the small fixed screen, not the popup display thing.

A shiny car with lots of extras just means it easier for them to sell , a good valet will bring most cars up to scratch so condition doesnt bother them too much as long as not dent/scratches kerbing etc.
Most extras dont add much value to the car really as they tend to be personal?

Exactly my point, parkers say £12k for 3yr old. Low mileage has probably helped.

I ha've to disagree with this a higher spec car and a basic spec car, both with the same mileage side by in any dealerships will always be different, just look on autotrader to find this out,l was researching bmw M3"s and all where the same age with very similar mileage"s but the higher specced cars where more expensive, same goes for the Audi S3

I was told by a dealer (so it could be utter tripe) that with marques like BMW that certain "Packs" are valued. This is because they are deemed to be low specced cars as basic models. So therefore certain packs are very desirable making the car more saleable. Therefore they are listed separately in the price guide book. A BMW 3 series is worth £X but with "information pack" £X + £Y whereas lower marques are simply listed as (for example) RCZ GT 200BHP worth £ in good/medium/poor condition with low/high/average mileage.
Clearly though once the dealer has his hands on your fully loaded RCZ, if he knows anything about the car will promote the extras to punters to achieve a higher selling price over a similar conditioned but factory standard model.
