I don't know if the ones fitted to the Mk2's are modified. But there doesn't seem to be the same number of reported issues with them compared to the Mk1's.
The replacement part is a modified version, as fitted as standard on the Mk2, so yes, once replaced it should be good for the rest of your ownership.
There have been many debates on this forum regarding Mk1 & Mk2 preferences, and indeed one member was actually banned for his quite strong...
Bear in mind that the 200 was the fastest 1.6 production car until the R was launched.
I have the 200GT. Handling wise, it's like it's on rails, (I think the extra lower brace bar makes quite a difference, coupled with the bigger wheels) and having driven 2 156's I can tell the difference...
If you choose a Mk2 with the LED DRL's instead of foglights, the timing chain issue has already been resolved on those, so the chances of that are pretty slim.
A common fault on all Z's is the jacking point issue, so you should check the sills to make sure they haven't bent/split from the car...
It's that point (I think I'm about to break this) where I usually decide it's probably not a good idea after all.
