Chains clatter, not tick. Obviously the noise will be from the timing gear end of the engine. If you can start it from cold it will definitely help. They aren't a quiet engine by any means, but the clattering sound is fairly easy to identify. Mine was done at 60k. Chain, guides, tensioners...

To be honest if you can find one with a new chain and tensioners they're not much trouble. Although it's not that expensive a job. Mines just had it all done. Averages 38/39 mpg and is a lot of fun. Sent from my VFD 710 using Tapatalk

You don't mention what engine it is. Petrols do use a certain amount of oil anyway. If you aren't sure, don't use it. I assume if it's burning coolant it will be steaming from the exhaust. Coolant/water and oil don't mix meaning you will probably end up borking something if you run the engine...
