As already said, the blue smoke at mot time is a definite red flag for me, I buy many minis/ds3/Peugeots with the psa prince engine and these engines suffer from valve guide seal issues and carbon build up issues hence the blue smoke, at around your budget other than that you want proof of timing chain replacement, new brakes and caliper refurbishment, hpfp replacement and of course a decent service recor.

don’t give up on an R, the positives cheaper to tax than a 200bhp, insurance is reasonable and good on fuel if treated well, and of course rare as hell,

I use my R for mainly leisure and love it.

good luck mate.
Cheers Charlie, that's a bit more positive, I will only be using it as a leisure car, no commuting or work use.

Aside from the brakes and the fuel pump the timing chain replacement at £800-1000 is also scary!

Try not to be put off by the negatives, my R had calipers replaced under warranty twice within the first 3 years!
don’t forget these are performance cars, they will have been driven hard and enthusiastically, but should have been maintained correctly.

Dont discount private sellers as at least you can ask them if it’s been run on Shell V power.

I personally wouldn’t buy a low mileage example for top money with all these impending big bills still to come!, just my opinion.

if you are in no hurry to buy, the right one will turn up

Thanks for more positives, yes after the feedback I think I'll lean towards a car with the HPFP, timing chain, discs and callipers all having been replaced at least at some point, unless it's at a price with these factored in, which is unlikely as it looks like that could easily run to 4k!

Are any of these costs common to the 200 or just associated with the R?

4k is nothing if you want to own a performance car, the R is in the same bracket as any beamer with a M badge or anything RS from Audi etc.

These cars are cheap in comparison to the above due to badge snobbery, but they won’t be in the future.

The R is a great car but you need deep pockets to own one, in other words if you don’t have a pot before you buy it could be a long wait before a good one comes along.

I was just talking about what to budget in for front brakes, timing chain and fuel pump if not recently done.
Cheers, all this info is what I was looking for when I joined.

The HPFP and timing chain is a potential issue on all the cars with variants of this engine.

The HPFP isn't a big bill of you get it refurbished rather than buying a new pump.

Another thing that I would point out is that when it comes to selling an R you will need to sell privately. Trade in values and offers are low.

As is with any car Kerr, buyers market at the moment.

I do wonder where all the 200 and odd owners are though with the R, not on here.

I would love to be proved wrong.

Wow! Some of those prices are scary!

I'm talking to a dealer re a 2 owner 88,000 2014 for 10k, he, assures me there's FSH with a lot of receipts including a recent water pump, but without going through them myself I don't can't be sure what's there. he did say that they have had the wheels refurbished.

I'm trying to make sure it's worth a 300+ mile round trip by train!

Cheers, I'm so glad I posted here today, I didn't realise the huge difference between the 200 and the R, it seems nearly everything is specialised and expensive, which is probably what has has kept the secondhand values lower than you would expect for this calibre of car!

I don't do a lot of mileage but it is going to be used as my everyday car, so maybe the 200 is a better bet, but I've fell in love with the R!
There are plenty of parts that are bespoke to the R from those that are engine related, to the suspension, brakes, interior and wheels etc. I would go nowhere near an 'unkown' trade R @88K mile for £10K without a Peugeot Warranty (not a third party one as they are shite) though those cars covered will be ending soon as you can only renew under 100K miles and at under 10yrs.... especially with a 300mile round trip to see it.....that is/will not be a 'bargain' more like a money pit?!

I would personally not purchase a daily driven R nor one on higher mileage as the residual/resell values show that the money is all in the low mile Garage Queen's (if that is a factor for you). I would also not wish to risk big bills as the bespoke nature of some parts and Peugeot prices are scary.....that said as above it is a performance car and is cheaper to own than an equivalent Cayman TT etc. So for me it's a second car etc driven to enjoy in the warmer months; so if you find an enthusiast who can document the work undertaken/parts replaced on their lower mileage car then why not......many have been on here over the year's thinking that because it's a Peugeot it should be cheap and cheap to maintain; many have left not willing to pay the money for a decent R as it did not give them the apparent 'flex' or apparent 'motoring kudos' they were looking to achieve for the money required of them (definitely part of the attraction of the R for me); anyone who has owned one that I have managed to meet and spoken to has raved about the R and these were people with higher priced and higher spec cars, supercars etc.

Can't believe the increase in prices of the discs my set are in the garage bought when they were £600 odd a pair!

Looking at the market, £13k+ (possibly) to £16K+ should bag a decent one.........

The disparity between advertised prices and trade values has always been high. The gap is unusually high and buyers might not realise. It is something to take into account. Offers from the trade are miserable.

The grey one on Autotrader at £12,999 with 39,000 miles looks a good one. It's £12,850 on their website.

The front discs have been an advisory on the last two MOTs. The dealer has avoided pictures of the front brakes. If the discs are worn I would really expect a main dealer to change them.

It has front parking sensors, the JBL hi-fi, and it looks like it has the carbon fiber roof. I'd double check it's not a wrap. If not that is an expensive option.

At last the voice of reason Flanners, was beginning to think you had left the fold.

Seriously though, there is not one single R for sale at the moment where all the real issues associated with a performance car are addressed and prove of essential maintenance done, which is why they are cheap.

I disagree 13k would bag a decent one with jobs done, 16k seems still cheap given the price of parts, but the old badge snobbery sadly holds prices back on the R for now anyway.

Where the front parking sensors an option?

yes I have them, many new owner's were miffed they were not included as they were with other 200 models rtc.....weirdly.
I have them too, thought they were standard, don't have the JBL though or the carbon roof, would kill for the carbon roof.

Yes I was looking at the grey one and thinking it could well be a better bet, although it's even further away!

Well I've learnt enough today to know not to rush into buying one, many thanks to all contributors.

One thing that does puzzle me which I understand is common to all RCZs, is how replacing a timing chain can cost £800-1000?

I don't think that is an unusual price for a timing chain replacement.

Garages will look for 5 hours labour plus the cost of the parts.

I think personally it’s better to buy private, that way you get to meet the owner and that gives you a better chance to look at what has been done.

Most if not all cars being sold by dealers will at least need the brakes doing amongst other things, it’s easier for someone who doesn’t want to spend to trade in and let the dealers have the hassle of the repairs.

If your still set on getting an R then patience is definitely the key.

According to how many left there are 273 R’s left either taxed or sorned so yes you will have travel to find one.

timing chain kits are about £150-£200 to buy and garages are going to charge 5-6 hours labour +vat.

these Cars are now 10 years old and you probably won’t find one in a main dealership, personally a private buy would be my route.

so we've 'lost' 11% of the registered R's in the UK in 10yrs......
