Just over 2 years using it as a daily, now have a massive bill coming..
The car is due for its timing chain replacement, new front disc and pads, due for 3000 mile service, requires a new clutch as its slipping and finally it has developed the engine code P00B.
A peugeot specialist who I have known for over 20 years has said it wont be cheap. (he will let me know in the morning)
Maybe I should rest the car after the repair?
How much do you reckon this lot willl cost?

Timing chain will be around £800 depending on the garage hourly rate.

Genuine discs are about £750 for Peugeot Parts direct.

EBC Yellowstuff pads are £120.

The other issue you will face is the pistons in the brake calipers will have corroded and the pistons will need replaced with new stainless pistons and seals. That's about £300 for the parts. Labour to fit discs, pads and caliper rebuild around £150-200.

I'm not sure what a new clutch is to replace. It could be very costly if you need the DMF replaced as well.

I hope your specialist is nice to you. It's going to be a huge bill with everything at once.

At what miles do these need a timing chain? Surely can’t be low miles, understand the brakes mine is 36k so having a full makeover, just waiting for Peugeot to sort callipers, there is a little life in the disc and they would probably skim, but I have purchased new disc because I like things perfect.

I think the R doesn’t make a good daily due to the running cost, basically I see it as a weekend car which mine is, lock her away after the repair and keep for weekend.

The R is my daily.

I had been doing a lot of shorter journeys the previous couple of years and my timing chain needed done at 60,000 miles. The car has never used a drop of oil, always at max, and still didn't last. I think the short trips didn't help.

We had a Mini Clubman S with a
variant of engine and it was over 100,000 miles without the timing chain being changed.

Are you buying new calipers from Peugeot?

No not buying being done under warranty, I have the extended warranty, I also have some other issues which I am also claiming for, but can’t get car in till the 21st of this month, so hopefully they will be sorted at same time.

not a good start to my relatively new ownership.

What else are you claiming for?

That's handy with the warranty for the calipers. It's a really bad design flaw they should require to fix. Brake calipers should last a long time without repair or replacement so often.

I can smell coolant in the engine bay after a long drive, think I have a very small leak somewhere, no water on floor, plus doesn’t seem to be low in the expansion tank.

The other thing is odd, I have a milky spot inside the drivers headlight, something I missed before the purchase, very strange, not hopeful for that.

Seem to remember your car had issues prior to purchase...which vendor was supposed to be correcting for you...brakes etc? If new clutch I would get the flywheel replaced too...I would go for a lightened SMF. Eye watering bill for that lot...hopefully on mate's rates and you sourcing parts.

Only just managed to get the car in today.
  1. New timing chain replacement (genuine pug part)
  2. New front discs and pads (original discs with Kevlar pads from godspeed)
  3. New clutch (genuine pug part)
  4. New thermostat housing
  5. Full service
  6. Washer bottle replacement due to leak
  7. Diagnose the fault P00B
All I can say its definitely not be as reliable as my 205 GTi , even though I have virtually serviced and oil changed the R every 4K miles. Hopefully this will be a last of the expensive repairs for a while .

That's a shopping list but from numeous cars over the years I've found the 60-70K mileage always requires a big spend.

The 'good thing' from your list is they are all consumable parts/known issues with the RCZ (R) which seem to require replacement/attention nothing 'major'; all at once though is £££ painful!....except for the Washer Bottle?.......HPFP been done or is that another issue lurking?

'Modern' cars/and some of their parts just don't seem to be built/engineered to last with parts prices rising (if you can even get them); that said for a bespoke performance car the R is still 'cheap' to run in comparison to other marques.

I am still trying to get over the life of the timing chain on our cars, seems even if you over service it doesn’t make a difference, could it be with the R it’s a high revving engine generally, due to the gearbox ratios, I have noticed when motorway cruising revs are much higher than anything else I have owned in a long time, I presume this is to keep the turbo spooling for acceleration, which I like saves changing down from sixth when cruising, but on the other hand not ideal for long term cruising in my view.

They did sort everything when I bought it . Funny thing is the brake discs have lasted until now. Had my spare brake discs about a year and not needed them until now.

Arghhh still no car, they found another problem the pistons on the callipers are rotten. Just ordered a set of Godspeed with seals 🤪 looks like gigantic bill is coming and that’s no exaggeration ☹️

This is an issue Peugeot and Alcon should be forced to sort out. Brake calipers should not need replaced, or aftermarket repairs required after a few years.
