Xenon Headlights

Ordered my new car today, quite excited and cant wait for the 12 week delivery time to arrive!

One regret though is not asking for the Vision pack. Really wanted this, but as Im being posted to Germany for 2 Years I have to have LHD lights fitted to the car, to get the car it comes with RHD lights, and you buy the vision pack extra. Long and short of it to buy the LHD Xenon lights seperatley would have cost about £1700 and £50 fitting. I couldnt really justify this for something that I will only use for 2 years (even considering selling them on ebay, i will still loose a lot). So I skipped the vision pack option.

My question then is, once I return to the UK, how hard/expensive is it to upgrade to xenon lights, or the vision pack? Im expecting the vision pack will be unreasonable as it will probably require extensive rewiring? Or does anyone know a distributor that does the LHD lights cheaply? Really after any advice as to whether I should phone the dealer and get the vision pack added back on!

Unfortunatley as i am in the Army it isnt an option for me to just drive on British Xenons with the beam 'flattened' :(

Wiggers,
this has been asked before, i cant find the thread though but it's not a cheap or easy fix to replace the standard lighting unit afterwards.
Its not just the wireing of the lights, apparantly they have to have a washer system as well i think, but i may be wrong, i'm sure it goes into the front bumper though ?

It's hell of a lot of money though for lights, dont you think , but if you are dead set on them then you should really consider doing it now rather than later.

I ended up not going for the pack and to be totaly honest i dont regret it at all, dont get me wrong the Xneon lights are good, but they are just brighter lights !

You cant upgrade to vision pack after the event. They have to be self lvelling and have the washer system installed to be legal.

As I understand it is a simple job to point the Xenons to LHD. I understand it is a requirement on all new cars now to be able to alter for continental driving.

Better to pay the £600 and have them fitted with your order.

Mr Shiney, is that correct? I know its a simple job to have them flattened, which basically allows you to drive on the continent and vice versa temporarily, but to meet the Continental MOT equivalent, or for the car being registered on the Continent the flattened beam wont cut it. This was the advise the dealership gave me who specialise in exporting cars to Europe for HM Forces pers. I'd be quite happy to be proven wrong though :D

@ Jactac, thanks, i remember reading the forum about the wiring but forgot about the self levelling and washer system. I agree if im going to get it, it needs to be now. But I think (unless someone knows somewhere to buy cheap LHD light units) that I will stick with the non vision pack.

i would go for the vision pack personaly it great with the lights that move as you go ito a bend.also the headlight washers are ok even though they tend to wash more than the lights. just change the drl/s to led/s only £12 on ebay they are the bees knees.

Thanks bee, I would, if i didnt have to pay an extra £1750 for LHD lights :p! Shame as the new BMW i was also looking at offered the Xenon lights for an extra £700, I would have eben quite happy with that price :(

I should think lights that are directed by where you are steering would be very useful in dark country lanes but not really necessary in lit city streets or motorways. I dont have them so I dont know but just a guess...

Wiggers, you would need to check the exact rules but I am pretty sure all new cars have to have headlights the are adjustable for LHD. Are cars not registered on BFG plates anymore?

theyre registered on BFG plates, but have to conform with german highway aithority (or whatever theyre called) Rules. In fact, theyre more strict and pretty tight. If i dont get it, i wont be able to take the car on camp, or get the fuel coupons either!

Just came across your thread. As I am BFG we have the same issue and are going for the normal lights. Do you have any idea if the fog lamps / reversing lights also need changing/altering, the dealer we are sourcing from didn't specify when we enquired about getting the lights changed, so I am assuming they are fine. FYI, best quote I can get for contintal lights is 175 euros each ex VAT. Got any better quotes?

And you are right about needing continental lights for the BFG. They changed the rules a couple of years ago. We have continental Xenons fitted to our other car, but they certainly did not cost 1700 pounds!

4 points.
.1. the xenon lights on peugeots aint that powerfull compared to german rivals.
.2 headlamp pressure jet wash is a farce as only a mechanical headlamp wiper will clean the headlamps properly WELL VOLVO/SAAB.
.3 buy a hid kit £133 from aotobulbs direct,500k kit premier kit it will give you the best light ever.adjust as a appropriate via the headlamp leveller, setting 3 is best to use for on coming traffic.
.4 not all xenon/hid headlamps are of the projector type,Honda type R 09 plate onwards are not of the projector type.

SO IT IS POSSIBLE without the naff pressure jet wash its more water pistol like.

I have to say that the AFL (adaptive forward lighting) on my previous Vauxhall Astra was certainly better than this Peugeot system. That said I would not want to return to normal headlights after experiencing Bi-Xenons

have you tried them ??

the pressure jet wash was a poor alternative to the headlamp wiper primary because its cheaper and more reliable,(wipers tend to fail or be vandalised)headlamp pressure jet wash was used intially by ford on there top end models late 70's and through out the 80's as i can remember, another reason the pressure jet wash including the wiper system was phased out was due to headlamp design.

the system thats employed by by most manufacturer's now where the nozzle pop's out from the bumpers is prone to malfunction as well, only porsche still use the jet washers on the bumpers bmw/mazda use to a few years back but now the arm system from inside the bumper is more common due to the design of the bumpers and the headlamp design,i could write a short story on xenon lights/headlamp pressure jet wash/wipers..............sad i know my father had this on all his fords in the 80's

Emilier sorry, havent been on for a while. Now have the definitive answer with regards headlights and BFG.

1. German law and MOT equivalent will accept RHD Headlights as long as they have been flattened.
2. BFG however wont. IF you want to BFG your car for car passes, fuel coupons, VAT refund etc, then you MUST have LHD headlights fitted DURING the test to get a pass. This is due to the SOFA terms and is non negotiable..

Solution then is to either fork out for a set of LHD lights and sell them when you leave (try looking in sixth sense paper, or on BFGFISHBAY, although I had no luck whatsoever). OR you could buy/borrow a pair for the test, get the tick in the box and return them after, putting your flattened RHD lights (which is perfectly legal as far as German Traffic laws are concerned) back on. Your call, i bought a pair and missed out on having the xenons which is a bit upsetting. I know some of the car dealers (especially the ones you get on camp) have spare LHD lights that they my rent to you for your test. I ended up buying them with the car direct from peugeot and got charged 400 quid with fitting.
