Hi all.

Wondered if anyone has had any trouble with this in the past. Ive always drove petrol engine cars but now changing to diesel.

Has anyone tried one of the safety caps you can buy on their rcz and how they work?

or any tips hints so i dont break down crying at a petrol station. ha!

Cheers. Joe

If you are driving a diesel and top up with a bit of petrol as long as you stop around the couple of gallon mark on an empty tank and just top up the rest with diesel you should be fine. Diesel engines by their nature are more resilient about the fuels they will run on. Granted I wouldn't do it on a regular basis but as a one off it should be ok.

Easier said than done these days, my head head is in a spin all day every day.
Mortgage, Work, dogs bad, cats bad, dogs chewed cats tail, boiler playing up, shopping, bills, even more bills, ect ect

Sh*t, look what I've done now, ........ petrol in my diesel. Been there done it not funny, and certainly an easy thing to do on these frantic mad days. ;)

I was reading about a little gizzmo that is attatched to the top of your fuel intake and it "sniffs" the end of the fuel nozzle gun, so if you set it up for say diesel and you put the petrol nozzle by the fuel filler hole the gizzmo alarms, same applies if it is set up for petrol and you go in with the diesel nozzle.

My son showed it to me on the net a while ago.

As I understand it the nozzle for either diesel or petrol is smaller than the other (although I can't remember which way round it is).

This makes it impossible to put a diesel nozzle into a petrol hole (or perhaps the otherway round).

It only helps one way though, and as I can't remember which way it is I think this post is a bit pointless...damn.

This rule does not apply to the RCZ. There is a green ring around the fuel pipe on my Hdi model. Strange but true

You can't put diesel in a petrol so diesel owners are the ones who can pay the price. on older vehicles its possible to put diesel in a petrol but this equals less than 10% of the 200,000 drivers that make the mistake each year. Think I will make a really big sticker just to remind me further.

There is actually a business around here that comes to the forecourt and changes the fuel over for you .....I didn't realise that there would be enough people putting wrong fuel in to be a viable business but its been running 3 years.

 OLD diesel engines are a bit resilient. New diesel engines with the common rail injection are not so happy with the wrong fuel. The injectors can be damaged very easily.

Not sure if this is entirely correct. I can get a diesel nozzle from my local Tesco station in the filler cap on my Z and it fitted in my Vauxhall Astra. Luckily I realised on both occasion what I was about to do.
I did though actually put unleaded in my Polo Diesel just a few months ago, not a lot, so no damage done.

I think it all depends on the place you use to fill up, some nozzles will easily fit into either tank. :?

Oh. Thats interesting. i was reading up that across europe the pump nozzles at garages should be the same. I think the answer to my topic question is 'be careful' as the devices you can buy appear to be unavailable to the rcz

Some nozzles do indeed have different angles, but I know for sure that Tesco and I think Asda nozzles, even though they have different shaped nozzles for the petrol and diesel will both fit into the RCZ and Vauxhall Astra tank.
And without a shadow of a doubt the unleaded nozzle at Tesco in Llansamlet, Swansea WILL fit into a diesel tank on a VW Polo.

Been there, seen it, done it

Normally the nozzle of a petrol pump is smaller than the nozzle of a dieselpump. So it can be possible to tank petrol in a diesel car, but diesel in a petrol car is more difficult.

Honestly, the diesel nozzle at a Tesco pump falls into the petrol RCZ tank, I think it's because the filler hole on the Z is facing almost straight up as opposed to a tank fitted on the side of a different car, so the weight of the nozzle just allows it to drop in enough to the tank for it to feel "ok to fill" :?
