Why do you just want the tensioner? If your chain has become slack then you need the full timing kit, the original guides are a week spot and have been revised. I would bite the bullet and get a good Peugeot dealer or specialist to do the work, around £500 and you will have peace of mind.

For me its the 1.6thp petrol but I am not a big fan of oil burners.

I am starting to realise that some of the guys dont realise what the problem is with this motor though.
I will try and explain.

The motor is designed in a certain way that uses metal, composite and plastic parts.
The particular oil used can have varying effects on the particular plastics causing them to become brittle.
Peugeot screwed up with a batch of chain tensioners and replaced some. That does not mean timing problems have gone away, there is actually a different problem.

Having said all that, the THP motor is a belter. Now, to cure any forthcoming problems, a simple service can be done.

If a thp owner with a car around 70k wanted to sort it, its very simple. I think ALL thps should be done regardless.

Never mind if yours has already had a replacement timing chain tensioner,, it irrelevant.
A new timing chain kit has a new
tensioner
chain
lower sprocket
v rails
top guide. Should be available around £250 to £300

Change them, ( DIY capable ) and stick to ONE MAKE AND GRADE of oil, and the next 100,000 miles,,,,sorted!!!!
The kit was probably the easiest replacement of a timing chain on any car and we have done several now.

Yes a diesel is more bulletproof for longer but it always comes down to personal preference.

I am just waiting to hear if my 2011 Z is about to get it's timing chain / tensioner changed for the second time. First changed just as it was coming up to 3 years old and it is now 7 years old.

I could list all the bits that have been changed under warranty (original manufactures and extended) but I haven't got long!

I am luck to get 18K miles out of my front tyres!!

Still love it though!

The chain is -slightly- rattling only when the engine is cold. There's no rattling when the it gets warmer and oil pressure builds up, I am assuming the tensioner is on its way out whereas the chain seems to function well. Please correct me if I am wrong

Owners have reported that their thp engine sounds like a diesel when first started in the morning. That’s when it’s time for a timing belt change

Hi I can see your reasoning but I’m afraid it’s false economy, as Robrac has stated earlier just change the whole kit and you should be trouble free for 70k or so.

My chain started rattling when cold at 17k within a minute or so the chain would quieten down and when I let a Peugeot technician listen to the engine when warm he could still tell it needed doing, he also said that through experience all the timing kit must be done.

Further to my last post remember on cold start up if you listening to your chain with the bonnet up it does rattle slightly till the oil gets round, but you shouldn’t really hear it from within the car, the death rattle does make your thp sound like a diesel.

I asked the dealer to check the timing chain rattle when serviced the car about a month ago, they said it's okay, no need to do change anything, but, I can still hear it rattling like a diesel from the inside with the bonnet down. I think I am getting paranoid now

Same here... My dealer suggested me to wait until my RCZ is 5 years old and then i could get 20% discount for parts. I'm not sure if my timing chain is rattling like a diesel or not but it is definitely louder when engine is cold.

You could record that rattling sound and post it here.

The thing about a rattling timing chain is that the rattle isn’t the issue. It’s just a symptom.

We all know the consequences of a timing failure, and that doesn’t bear thinking about. I would want clarification from someone who knows what they are talking about, so that’s not necessarily a PUG dealer, as to how dangerous it is to let the timing chain rattle on for any length of time.

It took me around 18 months to get the Peugeot garage to agree that the horrible noise was the timing chain!! :wtf:

Hey guys if your engines sound like a diesel when cold get the timing kit changed ASAP why wait till it throws the timing out or breaks the guides amongst other things, it’s just false economy £500 or a wrecked engine I know what I would rather do. :eusa-think:

You wouldn't be able to join a forum and kick off about Peugeot being rubbish then though Neil.

One thing Peugeot should have owned up to the timing cock up and recalled all cars for the upgraded kit, but it’s just the lack of clarity among Peugeot dealers pricing for repair work that just defies belief I’m lucky I’ve got a great dealer who I know has the knowledge and the expertise to keep my Z going and all at a reasonable cost.

Totally agree. Cars should have been recalled and had upgraded parts fitted.
Means I wouldn't have had to deal with a main dealer if the previous owner had had the chain replaced :D

The facelift RCZ from 2013 - 2016 are the most reliable.

So many revised parts for the Prince engine. I know, as when my 207 cc Sport (THP150) needed attention, all the sensors, turbo oil line, etc had RP in the Pug catalog and new part numbers.

I'm looking forward to mine, was registered Jan 2016.

Cheers.
