Well I now use the same as Blondie uses
Hi, this my first post on this forum, just got my car on Weds so reading some posts and saw your phone holder, could you please share where you got this one from? Also does it work well?It arrived this afternoon. You can also see the vent one that I got. The vent one works ok, but often comes off with the phone. I'm pretty sure the CD one will work better.

Searching just now, I didn’t know these types were a thing. They are available on ebay and amazon if you look for cd phone holders
The phone looks secure in that slot even in landscape mode. Thanks for sharing this creative DIY phone mount, @ropie!Hi all,
I was searching around this topic and came across this thread, but in the end I decided to come up with something of my own as the commercial alternatives are pretty much all rubbish. The CD one looks OK but I still use the player so that wouldn't work for me.
The best place to mount the phone is infront of that upper storage slot on the dash (it's approx. 35mm high at the front, tapering to 30mm at the back):

I decided to use an old phone case to actually hold the phone, but with an attachment fixed to the back to wedge into the storage slot. You'll need to make a hole in the phone case if it doesn't already have one in the right place. Here are the parts I used:

They are just parts I had lying around - the metal disc is from a broken cafetiere but this could be substituted with a large thin washer with a bolt through it. The black rubber thing is from an old weights machine, but could be substituted with one of those rubber floor-mounted door stoppers.
Assembled it looks pretty ugly but that's mainly because I used a clear case (and you can't see it when it's in use anyway):

As long as the large rubber piece is the correct size the phone stays rock solid when driving. You can adjust the vertical position of your phone according to where you make the hole in your phone case so plan this beforehand. In my case, I wanted to be able to access the CD player..

Happy building!
edit: I didn't think about it when I took the finished photos because I wasn't actually using the phone, but of course it would work much better positioned in landscape / horizontal format![]()
