Hi Rcz experts.

I have a 2012 peugeot RCZ with the 1.6 petrol engine. I need some advice regarding a squeaking internal rear view mirror. On uneven road surfaces and also when the engine revs hit 1500 to 2000 this mirror squeaks and vibrates. If I squeeze the mirror surround the vibration stops. I intend to take the front off the mirror and cover the joint with something to stop the two parts rubbing, but I am not sure how to get the front off without damage. Has anybody out there done this or know how to dismantle the mirror. Advice welcome. Thanks, Joe.

Never heard that one before but I believe the mirror twists out of the top panel.

It does twist off but be careful. Its a bugger to get back on again.

Thanks for the replies. I wonder if I have confusEd. I do not wish to take the whole mirror out of the car, instead I wish to dismantle the mirror in place by taking the front surround plastic rim off, in the hope of insulating this front rim from the main mirror housing, as it appears to rub and creak.

Service box does not show any breakdown of the mirror itself.....

I suspect you will just have to give it a go and be prepared to buy a new one if it breaks.

Much appreciate the response with diagram from the service book. I May well have to just go at it and see if the mirror will separate. So far I have tried lubricating the join with spray-on dry lub and then stretching an elastic band into the joint as a separator. This worked but not perfectly, so still looking for a solution

thanks again.

You can open it but you have to take it off to do it. The head of it fits tightly into a triangle metal plug and twists on a plastic bracket to get it out. Once out you have to undo the cable into the mirror that works the dimmer. When you have it out you then have to split the unit that is not supposed to be split. You will mark the edges trying I know because I took mine out to change the GPS Arial unit. Inside the mirror there is a small PCB board and a plug powering the light sensor. If you pull the mirror too harshly that plug will come off the board inside the mirror like mine did. So I had no option but to open it up to put the plug back on. I didn't end up changing the GPS unit as I could see no way of getting it out without pulling lots of other things out of the way that didn't look like they would go back in easily. I just bought another GPS unit plugged into the back of the head unit and placed it somewhere else that worked fine. So if at all possible dont open the mirror just see if the fitting is rattling.

Thanks for the reply with your experiences of dismantling the internal mirror. I will not attempt to remove the mirror from the wind screen, too risky for me. I might try to ease the front rim back a little to see if I can lubricate the joint in the hope of easing the vibration squeak, but thanks for the warning about damage. If this doesn’t do the trick, then I shall look for a new replacement mirror.

A final word on the vibrating mirror. Despite my cautious efforts the vibration persisted, so I tried once more and this time, right now, the internal mirror is vibration free. I read a BMW post from the us, where a similar problem was tackled using thin felt. In that case the mirror was removed and dismantled, then the joint between main case and front surround was lined with felt before reassembling. It was reported as a successful solution. My approach was less ambitious.

I found I could prise the two parts of the mirror slightly open while leaving it in place. I took warning from an earlier reply regarding damage when using something metal, so used a plastic shirt collar stiffener to make the first separation then a slightly thicker plastic plant stick/label to gain a little more opening. I cut some strips of thin black felt intending to poke those into the gap. In the end I got just two small (quarter inch) pieces into the gap, but it turned out to be enough to silence the vibration. I trimmed off any excess with a sharp blade (be careful, mine slipped and I was lucky to keep my finger !) then stretched a thin black elastic band around the mirror and in the gap between main case and front trim to finish off neatly. Job done and so far it continues to be vibration free.

hope that is useful to others.

I now have another vibration issue which I will post separately.

Vibrations from the engine.

following my success with a vibrating internal rear view mirror, I have a potentially more costly vibration to fix, as follows in my post below:

I have a Peugeot RCZ 1.6 THP 156 (156bhp) Petrol (16v) FWD (1598cc) - T75 (2010-2016) Coupe (Year: 2012). She has covered 31,000 miles.

There is a persistent vibration coming from the engine, felt both when driving and when stationary. This has been looked at by a trusted service garage who say they are familiar with the engine as they service them in Peugeot and Mini cars. When I took the car in to them they also had another Peugeot in with the same engine, a 308 if I remember correctly. They fired that up and compared vibrations, both cars had similar vibrations, which are mainly felt through the steering wheel as a high frequency vibration which on a longish drive seems to make my finger tips tingle. The car is in good condition fully serviced with no obvious issues. The service tech took the fact that both cars had the same vibration as a sign there was nothing to be done, but it could be there is a fault which has affected both mine and the other Peugeot. Does anybody have any knowledge of this issue ?

Thanks

Joe
