I have a THP 156 and when I went to get a remap was told that the ecu was locked and could not be tuned. I know that the TDI Tuning box and Race chip are generally not well liked, but is this the only option to get a few more ponies out of my car? I would also like better throttle response whats the best way to achieve that? Thanks 👍

I'm pretty sure you can do a proper remap on the 156.
I'm sure Neil one of the mods has his 156 Launch Edition remapped.

A lot of cars across the variant ranges of all carmakers from 2009 were fitted with the Bosch ED17 & Med17 Infinieon Tricore processor & it appears the back street tuners tend to steer well clear of them because unless you have the right software these ECUs block out any incoming programmes which are not compatible with the manufacturers software
Go to a bona fide Tuner with all the right gear & particularly one with a rolling road & full diagnostic facilities & definately not one who comes to the house with a Laptop !

Yes 100%that the 156 can be reprogrammed it needs the ecu removed then remapped.
You must get the professionals to do it... I have a Hdi and the specialist in York says they can do mine and would get a further 30bhp for me and put it above 190bhp then lock down...
Will wait 163ok for now...
Drive safe and stay lucky 🍀

It was "french letter" who posted this link to etuners in the "156, 163 or 200 difference" thread that I found useful/interesting.

It will give some insight into ECU numbers, as well as maintenance.

I have just sold my thp 156 and have a tuning chip which I no longer need. It is plug and play so takes 2mins to fit/remove. I also have a cold air induction kit available, both were on car for approx 6months. Let me know if interested.

Yep had mine remapped about 3 years now it is a Bosch unit with tricore so the ECU has to be removed and directly written to, not a problem for the specialists best thing I’ve done to my car you won’t be disappointed 😊

Not sure what make but can ask local garage that fitted it. It is plug and play so can be fitted/removed very easily, Doesnt affect the ecu settings. As far as i know a remap involves taking ecu out and is a long job so 179 is very cheap, be sure you trust the installer. The induction kit is a forge kit and can be viewed on their website. Im in ripon, if thats any help.

The chip has 10 settings, i had it at 7 which i think gave 180-185 bhp although it wasnt put on a rolling road to chack. Will call at garage to get make info. Of course i will post if required.
