Caused by using strong chemicals like TFR (Traffic Film Remover) or shampoo which has been left to dry on the car, particularly in warm weather. You should always try to clean cars in the shade, never in full sun and always thoroughly rinse the car down to remove all residue.

Does that cut then :eusa-think:

Certainly not significantly, but like I said, I only use it when I have to. I wouldn't use it too often just in case :)

Yeah I think most of these metal polish's have some degree of cutting.

I had a tip from a friend who has similar style arches on his car, (a Megan I think) and he used to suffer water spots.
His tip is Windowlene, it has no cutting agents but does have cleaning and polishing additives, I guess if it's ok on glass then it should be ok on our arches.
He swears by it :eusa-think:

I have to say that there has been no stain, tar or dead insects that I haven't been able to remove using simple (used) nylon tights and regular car shampoo. Tights will definitely not damage the arch or paint.
One important thing in getting a shiny result is to use plenty of water. So before touching the car make sure you've sprayed it with water completely so that all dirt is already from the car.
Luckily my parents used to be gardeners so have a large capacity high pressure water tank and 2 inch diameter water hose with a wide spray head (used for watering plants), so I always wash my car there.
When I traded in my previous 307 it was 9 years old but the shine of recife blue paint was as good as new.

I just clean mine using pre wash, snow foam and two bucket method then dry them off with a little spritz of quick detailer as I dry them off. I use Chemical Guys Synthetic Quick Detailer. I have aslo applied some wax to them previously. I wouldn't want to use polish personally. I suppose that if it was relatively gentle in terms of cutting agents you might be ok but I wouldn't want to risk it personally.

Windolene or any glass cleaner contains IPA or isopropanol alcohol which is very good and removing water marks and is also used on paintwork after polishing to remove residual oils and before applying a wax or sealant.

Any metal polish has a little cut in it, that's the intention but you shouldn't have to use it often if the arches are washed and then protected correctly.

I always used window cleaner on my harley-davidson to clean the chrome - comes up an absolute treat.

You have a Harley?! Awesome!! Would you be willing to share any pics on a new thread? Maybe you could call it "my other rides" or summat and folks could post their bikes (motor and or pedal), other cars etc? That'd be a cool thread!

PS -i have a Harley weakness. I am a big fan of their V-Rods and Sportster ranges.

Without wanting to go off topic too much, yes - a chopped sportster - and at its worst (or best depending on how you looked at it) I had 5 bikes at the same time - my favourite has always been the royal Enfield hardtail chopper

Fantastic John :)

It's one of the few things on my wish list to own a Harley Davidson. If I ever take my bike test..... You never know..... :)

Just had a look for some piccies of the Harley for you Rizz - but the only ones I can seem to find have a young lady in a state of - how do you say - undress - sat on it - and as I don't want to break any forum rules I'll just have to tell you that until I sold it last year, it was an 883 sportster that I rebuilt as 1200cc using buell engine parts (so it was VERY quick), had wide-glide billet alloy slab yokes, 18" rise ape-hanger handlebars, a corbin seat with back rest on the back seat, and looked really mean!!!

:lol::lol: I'm not sure that I'm not more intrigued now that you mentioned the lady in them!! I love the 883 sportsters, particularly the Iron 883 which just looks like one mean mother (hubbard). The one you rebuilt sounds freaking awesome though and sounds like it was a weapon after you were done with it. Hats off to you sir!!
