Timing Chain.......HOW MUCH!!!!

Story so far
Purchased my RCZ two years ago from a Private Dealer. Currently with my local Dealer for service and MOT which will cost about £370. They advised me that the Timing Chain has stretched and needs to be replaced. The car has done 37k and is a 2010 GT THP 156 Model. They have quoted me £996 to do the work but advised that due to the age and mileage and having full service history they would contact Peugeot to see if they will cover the work under warranty as it is a known problem with this engine. They would need to strip it down to assess how much the chain has stretched which they have now done.
Peugeot came back stating they would only consider covering the work if the car was under 5 years old (why didn't the dealer know this?) and it was suggested that we try making a request for a goodwill gesture. So the dealer requested this but Peugeot won't entertain this request either.
I am now left with a car sitting in the dealers for over two weeks in pieces and a potential bill of £1300+
Anyone have similar experience or can give any advice? I have researched online and been quoted £500 from a mobile outfit. I have also phoned two other garages who have quoted £1500 and £820 for the same work.

Contact Peugeot UK HQ yourself and explain that the dealership said that Peugeot would help towards the cost, don't mention that this has already been tried, that the car has full Peugeot service history and it's mileage.

At this point the worst they can say is no and you are in the same position.

The alternative is to strike a deal as parts I've been told are about £140 the rest is labour.

You might get a deal where the service is included!!!!

Let's us know how you get on.

You can try Citroen or Mini specialist, as the THP was used in few of their models.
I would avoid providing the parts and paying labour. If anything goes south, you break the chain of responsibility, and would be hard to say if the problem was the work performed or the parts were faulty.
And if you really need to pay the full price for it, try some franchise owned by Peugeot. Had the belt replaced for my DS3 (156THP) done under warranty by their branch in Letchworth.

I had exactly the same issue with my Z with only 17K on the clock! You shouldn't be paying anymore than £600 parts and labour my local Peugeot dealership actually did my timing kit for less than that and it was done in the day different dealerships just pluck a figure out of their heads and double it! Rip off merchants
I've just had my wife's Mini Cooper S timing kit done at a mini specialist same engine as pugs genuine BMW parts inc labour and 2 year warranty £500 done in the day. My dealer is Peter Ambrose in castleford West Yorkshire worth a call if your local.

Digging this up to say mine is in Pentagon at Scunthorpe having the chain done, and I get the distinct feeling they're going to take the piss.
From what I read Neil, you've had yours done in a day? And it was £600?

Hi, yes actually less than £600 from Peter Ambrose in castleford and £500 for my wife’s cooperS from a well respected mini specialist in Leeds both done in the day with all new parts fitted chain/tensioner/guides genuine parts used.

Well, I'm looking at a contribution of £500. I'll ask about warranty on parts when I pick it up.

Yeh sounds like they’ve stitched you up :( the parts alone are only £130 ish so you’ve paid that and the labour looks like the only thing they contributed is the complementary tea and coffe while you wait!
My dealer actually tried to get Peugeot to foot the bill as my car was only just out of warranty and had only covered 17K miles but because my full service history was done by an independent garage they wouldn’t entertain it.
Peugeot got away with murder not recalling this Engine when they knew it had parts that were sub standard and new designed parts were produced to cure the problem.

According to the warranty company the full bill is £1500. Just want the car back now really. I've had enough of chasing stuff and waiting for people to call back.
Why is stuff always hard.
If I'd have walked in and asked for it doing it would have been done and dusted by now.

Why book it in and keep it in bits while they mess about. I even said it was the timing chain rattling. Guess what, after a "diagnostic" at £100 I got a call. "It's the timing chain".

Well thanks, I told you that and I didn't even need to plug my Peugeot planet in to it, the bloody rattle made that obvious!

So a 6/7 hour job now stands at Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I've pointed out unless they want 200 miles putting on the 108 they've loaned me, I'd like my car back this weekend.

And it's exactly this sort of thing that makes me think main dealers are pissing idiots.

It's interesting in this world of right and wrong, how this has not been challenged - properly.

Everyone knows insurance and warranty companies, over inflate prices when it comes to repairs,
and yet they go unchallenged. This is one of the reasons that premiums are so high in both these areas of business.
Main dealers franchises and family owned garages, have huge overheads which unfortunately need to be passed on, and I for one have supported both back street mechanics and main dealers ( mainly when the car is under warranty as it's part of the conditions ). But I detest the blatant over pricing in this sector, I follow your anguish and sympathise with your position in wanting your car back, I would too, but I would certainly let the warranty company and the dealer know how I felt about the pricing and even point them to the forum to prove pricing.

Hope your Z is back on the road soon, where it belongs and is back to 100% zooooooooommmmmmm !!

Cheers M.

What symptoms did you guys have in your rcz in order to get a reply from the dealer saying that you have to replace the timing chain??
I had a very small oil leak and ended up being the chain tensioner that was replaced under warranty, however I still having a bit of rattling known noises from the thp engines in my rcz r. My warranty expires next july.
By the way, if you write thp in youtube the first option offered is thp chain noise.
Let me know please.

Just had my rcz 1.6 petrol timing chain replaced it was a whole kit plus few other bits they found broken whilst doing the job . Car 16 plate with only 28.000 mileage I was devasted but tbh it had been sounding like a diesel engine from get go . Bought it private and just got used to it and thought it was normal noise these cars made until after a service i was told the chain had stretched . Anyway jobs done cost £400 and runninglike a baby and so quiet . Apparently these cars model are prone to this problem . Fingers crossed that's it sorted .

£400 seems very reasonable can you let us know where you had that done may help other owners in the future, you should be good now just keep an eye on the oil level by the dipstick and keep it topped up to max also change the oil and filter every 5-6K miles and your motor will keep running sweet 👍🏻
