Time to spec the new car... a few questions.

Well, it's now coming up to 3 years since I got my RCZ and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of ownership, so much so that I'm about to order another. I love the spec on my current car but don't want to just repeat the look an feel on the next one. To make the changes significant I have decided to go for the complete opposite, current model is white, new one will be black, current roof arches silver, next one will be black etc.

There are one or two things however that I could do with some advice on. I know they will be featured elsewhere on the board but as I am due to order the car tomorrow I thought I would ask them here in the hope of getting a quick answer (forgive me for not searching them out myself)

Firstly my dealer is offering me a deal on adding Sat Nav. I don't have this on my current car and think it would be a nice addition (especially at a reduced price) but have heard mixed reports about how good it is on a day to day basis. One of the complaints I have seen is that it won't take a full UK postcode, is that correct? I currently have a Tom Tom and although not a fan of sticking it on the windscreen I could happily continue to do so if the fitted option has issues.

And secondly I am planning to order the same car, a GT-200, but have to ask the question, is it worth trading up to the R? I have never felt the need for more power than I already have (in the past I have also owned cars in excess on 350bhp) and am not sure if I can justify the the inevitable increase in insurance etc.

I would appreciate any advice and once again apologies for not searching the answers out myself but time is against me at the moment.

Many thanks

Hi, it's so good to hear about someone who likes their Z so much they want another! Mostly we only hear about people's faults.

Sat Nav, I have it in my GT200 and now I have updated the maps it works great, full UK postcode search, good maps, and it certainly enhances the look of the interior. If you are ordering new, it will probably come fully updated, but if not, just make sure your dealer agrees to a free update to latest software & maps when you place the order.

GT200 or R? There are plenty on this forum that will advise this is a no brainier, R every time. But, if you are happy with the power of the 200bhp, the extras you get over the R would certainly sway me to choose the GT200. This is obviously a very personal decision, but for me, the extra cost of the R, coupled with the extra cost of insurance, higher fuel consumption etc etc would certainly sway me to go for the GT200. You say you have had more powerful cars in the past, so you know what you are missing out on there anyway, and the GT200 is certainly no sloth as you already know.

I am envious you are getting a nice new Z, although I have only had mine a couple of months anyway, and I am still in the honeymoon period with it, although I think that might last a long long time

Let us know which you choose

From a fuel consumption perspective, unless you really cane it, there is not much difference between the R and GT200. Having owned an R for about 6 months and a GT200 for three years previously, the fuel consumption on my daily comute of about 12 miles each way is about the same, i.e. although I get a range of consumptions indicated on the trip computer depending on time of year, actual traffic conditions etc., both cars produced the same range of mpg figures. My commute is about 8 miles motorway, the rest slower roads. Being on busy roads, the driving exuberance is constrained by the traffic, so I dont think my driving style has changed between the two cars. That is, I'm not driving like a saint because of fuel consumption worries. For me it's a reasonable, real-world comparison.

So, I think - from my perspective - fuel economy alone is not a strong objection to R ownership. Of course, the extra performance - and you will notice it compared to the GT200 - might lead to a change in driving style, which would be reflected in the mpg figures.

Just another thought, have you considered the red carbon edition - available in black or red, 156 or GT200 spec, now that is a fully loaded Z and has everything you were wanting and extras. Budget permitting of course. This is also a limited edition model, so the residuals might be a bit better.

I did originally look at the Red Carbon, in black, for that very reason. As I wanted to go completely different it was originally the black Onyx Solstice alloys that put me off. Don't get me wrong I love them (as it seems do you) but as my current car has them it doesn't go with the complete change of look I am going for so I fancy the 19" technical alloys in Storm Grey this time. Once I had added on the extras it came to just a fraction over the price of a Red Carbon but I also discovered that the RC has no front parking sensors and looses the electric seats which I like so the little extra is worth it for those alone.

I also like the technical 19's and the gadgets you mentioned were also a factor in my purchase. Although to be perfectly honest, budget played a big part in my choice. I couldn't really go to the cost of an R and as the red carbon hadn't been out long either, there weren't that many used ones about, and the ones there were proved to be over my budget also.

I dropped on my car at a site in Castle Donnington. It was everything I had wanted, had every extra on it I would have chosen, and was also in my top two colour choices (white or red) and as Red was my wife's 1st choice it seemed too good to miss.

If I was speccing up a brand new Z by the time I had done, it would probably be exactly the same as a Red Carbon, only by choosing all the extras individually on a GT200, it would be more expensive.

I think your new car sounds like it will be right up my street

Well you've gone for the right colour!!check out my spec, I think I got nearly every extra possible and I would DEFINATELY get the quad exhaust fitted! Get the vision pack and the black pack. Don't bother with Peugeot Protect and I also love my onboard wifi!

Quick Update - Car was ordered end of November for a mid Feb delivery as usual... All good.

Slight hitch now is that it is going to be delayed by a couple of weeks... However now that delivery has been pushed into March the dealer informs me the new car will now be a 15 plate & not a 64... RESULT!

Too dirty on the roads at the moment anyway. Just had my current car valeted today and daren't take it out in this weather!

My 14 plate R came with full post code capability straight out of the box. I took delivery end of the March last year.
