Super Knocking

Hiya

I have a beautiful RCZ but the engine management light came on last weekend - no difference to the driving and drove it 2 hours home, albeit sensibly.

The Chelmsford Peugeot dealership has just diagnosed with "Super Knocking". It's 4 years old with 22,000 miles and they tell me it's because carbon has built up on frequent short journeys. My car sits on my drive all week and only ever does long weekend drives so am not convinced.

They're going to be asking Peugeot for a contribution (not told me what the cost is yet !) but would be interested in anyone thoughts

Thanks

Hi, do you know if the timing chain and tensioner have been replaced? A common problem with the thp engine is the timing chain tensioner is poorly designed and basically the chain stretches so the timing goes out of sinqu and this will bring the engine management light on.
More chance of this being the problem than a Coke issue especially if you only do long runs.
Next time you start your car from cold listen (outside of the car ) to your engine if there is a rattle which quietens down after a short while this could be the dreaded chain/tensioner problem. There is an redesigned tensioner now available to sort this problem.
Good luck.
Keep us informed :eusa-think:

Would it be correct to say these 'new' tensioners were on the MKII RCZ's?

I think they must be. I think all the posts I have read regarding the tensioner problems have been on Mk1's. I know they are older cars, but there must be more to it than that, so I also assumed that the re-designed tensioners being retro fitted to Mk1's with problems, were fitted to the Mk2's as standard.

Quite possibly I don't know of anybody with a mk2 that has suffered the tensioner problem maybe someone could tell us otherwise?
The new tensioner is shorter and thicker than the original.

It's a traversty that Peugeot didn't own up to the problem and do a recall.

Even worse that the mini cooper S fitted with the same engine was issued a recall for the tensioner

Hi guys right I'm new to this site but will try to help as a peugeot mastertech for 12 years and Rcz owner . Common problem on the petrol engine unfortunately .. This is a design fault from bmw but car needs to driven hard once and while and if it isn't then the valves get "coked up" . Valves then intermittently get stuck and causes slight misfire.. Engine ecu panics and tries to retard/advance the ignition timing and then eventually the engine knock sensor detects its "pinking" and brings on light......... Phew.
Now then the great guys at planet peugeot will remove inlet manifold and clean out your valves with a special shot blasting tool and clean them. Replace you timing chain and tensioner and bobs your uncle ... As for cost I can only say if it's still under manufacture warranty then not a problem. If it's just out they may contribute due to the low mileage .
Hope this helps

Thanks to everyone who's replied - The Great Guys At Peugeot have indeed agreed to pay for the repair - just need to check they're doing everything The Biff says they should. Have a good weekend

Low mileage on a petrol RCZ for it's age, is not a good thing...been saying this for a while ;)

I have 74K on my 2011 petrol but drive it hard on a occasion and have done since new, with no issues experienced other than thermostat and minor things.

I know this does not help with your problem, but is a warning to others that may read this that are in the market for an RCZ.

Hi,

I have read this and many other forum posts regarding super knocking and thought I would join in in the hope that someone can help as I am almost at my wits end with this problem. So, to give you some background:

I purchased my 2010 Reg RCZ in December 2014. It had roughly 36,000 miles and one previous owner. Not long after receiving it I noticed that on occasion it would produce a vibration and lose power. No Engine Management light came on and it carried on as normal despite not being particularly responsive and lacking power on acceleration. It went back to the garage for diagnosis, it is an independent but very reputable used car garage so has been out of the Peugeot 'Network'. Diagnosis pointed to various possibilities and these were:
Incorrect Fuel
New Spark Plugs
New Coils
Software Upgrade.
All the above were replaced and no software upgrade was required. Still I had the symptoms. A new timing chain/tensioner was fitted. Still the same symptoms. Then carbon build up was stated so these were cleaned. Car was brilliant for about two weeks then went back to having the symptoms. I read about the rear PCV being capped off so this was done. No change again. I had a new fuel pump and carbon catch tank fitted, still the same. Went back for diagnosis and engine knocking was the culprit again. They deemed that it could be carbon deposits on the piston heads so went back in for cleaning. This was done and 8 brand new valves were fitted as were heavily pitted and therefore not sitting properly when they closed. Car behaved impeccably for about two weeks but again the knocking has returned. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction of where to look now as the garage are scratching their heads! I contacted Peugeot earlier this year but they wouldn't entertain helping as it has been out of their network and repairs/parts can't be guaranteed as genuine Peugeot parts and fitted to their standards. Yeah nice get out clause!
I would really appreciate help from anyone who has had this problem and rectified it. Or is it just a duff engine?

Thanks in advance.

James
