You "hot them"?!:D I'm just teasing. I reserve the corrections solely for RON...I know he "enjoys" me pointing out his errors.:lol::lol:

PS - sometimes a hammer could come I very useful in teaching! It'd be a lot more effective deterrent than a detention or exclusion!

Yeah, I get to heat metal too so I was kinda right lol

I have a selection of "tool fine adjusters" that you can choose from

Glow plugs are used for preheat when the engine is cold. It warms the engine to make starting up easier. So in theory, if your engine doesn't start first time you will have excess fuel from where you've been trying to start so when it does start that excess fuel in the system, however small it may be will be burnt off creating smoke and smell.

Glow plugs basically do the job of spark plugs in a petrol engine but on cold mornings you have to let them heat up before they will function properly. Most diesel cars have a glow plug symbol (a small orange coil symbol on PSA vehicles) on the display which lights up when you switch on the ignition and then goes out when the plugs are heated up sufficiently. You should wait until that light goes out before attempting to start the engine. This can take a few seconds depending on how modern the engine is (VAG 1.9SDi isn't very new technology) and how cold the outside temperature is. If you crank the engine as soon as you get in on cold mornings that could explain why you are having to turn the engine over a bit before it starts. How high a mileage is the vehicle? Glow plugs do eventually need replacing although not as often as spark plugs.

Firstly thanks for the advice

I've noticed its worse on cold mornings, and it is rather high mileage. :eusa-think:

Since ownership have you paused from switching ignition on to starting up or do you just jump in and try and turn it over without the pause?

Theres no coil light on it m8. Apparantly thats on older diesels. I 've priced a set of Bosch glow plugs and its not bad, £50 for full set. So I'll give them a try first. I've been told it could be a valve stem seal. Hope not

Maybe, even without a coil light still jump in and give it a 5 second pause between switching ignition on and starting up. Give the plugs some time to do their job. Hope it all gets sorted mate and at a reasonable cost

jactac, my 2008 Hdi engine had the coil symbol but I'm not sure about VW's. Anyway I think I could probably supply you a set of Beru (OE supplier to VW) glow plugs for less than £50.00 if you haven't already made the purchase. If you're interested let me have your vehicle details or reg number.

All cars don't have the coil glow light?! I thought that was a given thing to have. Why would you NOT have it?! As far as i know atleast all Toyotas have it and all tractors/excavators/trucks etc regardless of age.

I was surprised when I bought it that there was no "Glow Plug " light, but apparently some makes dont have it any more ?
I think its only the type that have to warm up have a light, some cars now have a more instant glow plug.
However I think I will try as Chuzz suggests and leave it a few seconds before turning the key, if this dont help I'll change to plugs and get in touch with Hanswuk.

Thanks Chuzz, I'll give it a go over the few days, if it helps then I'll just stick to starting up that way, if not I will ask hanswuk for a price of new set of glow plugs.

Thanks for your advice

Bit of an update.

Been using a diesel additive for the last week or so and noticed a big improvement, also on closer inspection there is a "glow plug light" on the dash display that I never noticed

Come on give me a break, I've only had the car a year

Thanks all for your advice on my prob. (now sorted) I hope. :eusa-shhh:
