Smokey Diesel On Cold Start up.

Quick question,
Hope It's ok to ask this about my VW diesel ON HERE.
What could be causing a diesel to be smokey on a cold start up.
My VW 1.9 sdi diesel has started to get smokey every time I start it from cold, but as soon as I pull off it's fine, and no smoke whilst driving.
I've also noticed that it needs a couple of "turn overs" to start, whereas it used to start on the first attempt.
Any advice appreciated.

It could just be sooty build ups on some internal components but as I say, I shall ask the guys that will know

Well...I do! Who wants advice that results in a fiery inferno of grief at the hands of Beelzebub?! :wink::lol: (I'm totally not nailing this new S3 at all...it's getting embarrassing and shameful!!)

What colour is the smoke it produces buddy? There a couple of answers so far. Could be your glow plugs, not warming up properly and therefore not starting first time or you may have a dodgy injector, which could cause to much fuel to be put in or build up while being sat. Hope this helps and isn't to much like hell

That's something to start with , I've never owned a diesel so this is all a bit new to me.

Glow plugs are used for preheat when the engine is cold. It warms the engine to make starting up easier. So in theory, if your engine doesn't start first time you will have excess fuel from where you've been trying to start so when it does start that excess fuel in the system, however small it may be will be burnt off creating smoke and smell. I would say find a friendly mechanic to have a look. If you lived nearby I'd get a mate at work to have a look for you.

Glow plugs are used for preheat when the engine is cold. It warms the engine to make starting up easier. So in theory, if your engine doesn't start first time you will have excess fuel from where you've been trying to start so when it does start that excess fuel in the system, however small it may be will be burnt off creating smoke and smell.

Glow plugs basically do the job of spark plugs in a petrol engine but on cold mornings you have to let them heat up before they will function properly. Most diesel cars have a glow plug symbol (a small orange coil symbol on PSA vehicles) on the display which lights up when you switch on the ignition and then goes out when the plugs are heated up sufficiently. You should wait until that light goes out before attempting to start the engine. This can take a few seconds depending on how modern the engine is (VAG 1.9SDi isn't very new technology) and how cold the outside temperature is. If you crank the engine as soon as you get in on cold mornings that could explain why you are having to turn the engine over a bit before it starts. How high a mileage is the vehicle? Glow plugs do eventually need replacing although not as often as spark plugs.

PS - sometimes a hammer could come I very useful in teaching! It'd be a lot more effective deterrent than a detention or exclusion! :wink:
