Just wondering if there are any other IAM Advanced Drivers out there? :eusa-think:
For those of you who haven't done it and fancy a challenge (as well as seriously reducing your risk of having an accident), take a look at the IAM's Skill for Life course, which culminates in the Advanced Test [VIDEO].
You'll be trained (in either your own car or an instructor's) to the same level as non-pursuit/blue light emergency services using Roadcraft as the basis, generally by either an advanced driving instructor or sometimes a police driver. The course aims to allow you to make excellent, safe progress when conditions allow, increase your hazard awareness and car control skills and even how to drive economically too (which you will discover is not necessarily the same as slowly!).
In addition, it can also save you money on your car insurance, as it gives you access to IAM Surety (Adelaide Insurance) who are pretty competitive. More and more companies also allow you to add this additional qualification (and get a discount) at renewal time.
In summary, it really is a superb course (costs £139 for training and training materials, test, 1 year's membership and 1 year free RAC breakdown cover) which I highly commend to you all (IMO everyone should have to do some extra training such as this as it would make the roads FAR safer!), you'll be amazed at the bad habits you have picked up! You DO NOT need to be the next Louis Hamilton/Vicki Butler-Henderson in order to do the course, people of all ages are passing, from teenagers (who have recently passed their tests) to 70+yrs olds! There is also an Advanced Riding test for the Bikers amongst you, if you are that way inclined. Regardless, doing an IAM Advanced course WILL improve your driving skill considerably, while most importantly being great fun!
