Sick Cat :(

Hi all

I've have I had a terrible week! My poor puss cat is sick :(

A week ago today I went into the garden to call her as I usually do. I heard her crying pitifully in next doors back garden.

I cleared the 7ft fence pretty quick for a 50 year old...found her laying in a pool of blood, soaking wet and with puncture marks and blood flowing from her back. I don't know how long she had been there.

A dash to the emergency vet and a diagnosis of injuries from a fight with another cat. But she was in a terrible mess. Even I was covered in her blood..

She was critical for 3 days, and unable to pass urine or any bowel movement. Her left leg paralysed and her right leg unable to support her. Her tail is fine.

As she was showing little sign of improvement my vet told me to take her home and see if she relaxed enough to start the essentials.

Happily within an hour we had urine, and then 12 hours later a bowel movement.

Her leg is still paralysed, but hopefully it's just nerve damage which will repair in time. Thankfully no broken bones.

So, she is at home and we are allowing her to try and move as and when she wishes, but it's not very good, so she's getting a lot of assistance....which she begrudgingly accepts.

WHEN she is fully fit, she will have to come to terms with her new life, as I'm going to build a big pen for her so she can go out, but no longer roam.

My opinion on letting cat's roam free has been completely altered by this. I no longer want the worry it causes every night. I love her and I nearly lost her. I'm not going to go through that again.

Oh god, poor Puss! They're such a heartbreak and worry aren't they? But seems like she's a bit more contented being at home in her own familiar surroundings and I'm sure she'll make a slow and steady recovery. I imagine she'll be terrified to be out in the garden at all now - maybe putting her in a crate in order to get fresh air might make her feel worse - no way of 'escape' then. Maybe she just needs to be an inside puss now?

Right now I have my Holly draped round my neck ... as I know yours sometimes does .. it's a right pain in the ass trying to type!

I'll be thinking about ya, keep up up to date.....

That's awful news but hopefully she will continue to make a marked improvement in her health. She needs loads of love and treats :)

Sorry to hear that, I'd be devastated if that had happened to my cat. Fortunately he's the biggest one on the area and rarely leaves the house in his old age so never had any issues!

It might just be the pictures but your cat looks huge, must have been a beast of another cat to injure it so badly!

I'm sure your cat will recover and learn from the experience. My cat recently got bitten and puncture wounds on her bum, most likely from a Tom cat trying to get his way. Tail was down for over a week and she was very subdued. Now though it's a past memory and she's back to herself! It would be ashame to punish her for some other animals actions. Next time she will scratch its balls off!

Thank you for your kind replies chums.

The Pen will be an epic structure. I'm even planning a fence run so the meecies are still a hunting prospect.

Mindy is only around 15lbs so not a huge cat, but she is all muscle.

She is already running out of lives....missing for a week...locked in next doors garage for 2 days....then an RTA and a broken pelvis...12 weeks cage rest... We stupidly thought she might have learned.....

After this we are fully decided. she will never roam, but I'll ensure she has space, grass, and a hideaway. She will have access via a catflap to be in or out. And when I am home we will have a lead for excursions into the total but small garden.

Honestly. I've worried about this cat on a daily/nightly basis and its flippin' hard work since she was 9 Months. She has no sense of self preservation.

Time for me to get some sleep methinks......

Maybe just fencing (aka prison wire) round the top of your fence? My pal who has show cats has that to keep her beauties in.

That is fantastic news that she is going to be fine however! Never good when things like this happen.

What an absolutely cracking cat you have there Davie, such a shame to see her in a very poor way but fabulous how she is recovering. Plenty more fussing and rest and she'll be back to causing havoc in no time. Give her a fuss from me.

Blimey... What a difference in just a week

But sorry Davie, I don't go along with the tether idea. I fully understand your reasoning, however I feel that it is unnatural and wrong. Better to have a short and happy life rather than a long miserable one. Cats roam and so they should. How can she defend herself if attacked again ? Sorry but I think that you are wrong to do this to her.

That first video is enough to break anyone's heart. But it's great to see such an improvement.

YOU do what YOU think is best for your own cat, don't listen to what everyone else has to chip in. She seems quite happy being outside with you at the moment and it's still early days. It's not like you're being cruel - good on you for being able to get the harness on! I'd be ripped to shreds!

Who's to say she can't get out as normal in the future, maybe just take her in at nights?

I'm so pleased she's doing so well!

Wow Davie - I'm so glad she is better. It doesn't take long and I'm sure she'll be back to almost "normal" soon. I've had cats for years and 1 in particular was similar to yours. Always getting into trouble from day one when we got him. He most definitely had more than his nine lives! I think his list of calamities is far too long to list here. Suffice to say, he lived a wonderful 15 years and gave me many special moments as I'm sure Mindy will :)
