Should I buy one knowing what I know?

Hi everyone,

Can I just say that I will appreciate any responses to this post, even if you may have been asked similar questions many times before.
Thing is, my wife really fancies an RCZ (and why wouldn't you, they look fantastic) but I have a few reservations. She currently drives an '07 Mini Cooper S which utilises the 1.6 Turbo THP engine (as you know). It really is a great little car let down by a couple of rather big issues. Firstly, our Mini has had the timing chain and tensioners replaced rectifying the 'death rattle' but at only 65K miles it drinks oil at a rate of 2 litres per month covering very little mileage. I understand later Peugeot models had the return pipe from the cam cover deleted and 'capped off' addressing the oil consumption issues?
Thankfully, the crazy issue of having to replace run flat tyres when they puncture (even when they are only a few weeks old!!) isn't a Peugeot trait.

I'm an automotive design engineer so can take anything you want to throw my way but I just want to know are we going to have similar issues (chain rattle & oil consumption) if we buy a '10' plate 1.6 car for about 8 to 9K ?

The alternative is a Juke DIG-T......don't laugh, these things have a 190bhp 1.6 turbo engine with built in satnav, Bluetooth, reverse camera and dual climate.....I'm sure you'll have your opinions but they seem to be bullet proof???

All the best,

Aston

So, Mk1 RCZ (2010-2012) did (does) have the timing issues, as I'm sure you have seen on this site. The Mk2 2013-on didn't have it, modified parts etc etc. Chances are, if you get one, it will have already had the part replaced, and that will be with the modified version fitted to the Mk2. It is of course wise to ask first.
Oil consumption, Mk2 still is thirsty compared to certain other makes/models (I top mine up on an as and when basis, but that's not often, so I haven't really got a figure) but certainly not at the rate you mentioned. I haven't heard of excessive consumption relating to the Mk1, so I can only assume it isn't a particular problem.

Although the engine may be the same as in the Mini, it is a totally different driving experience. I think the the RCZ is the kind of car that, if you are thinking about buying one, then you really need to buy one, if it's something that has never really appealed to you, then you should buy a Nissan Duke. :eusa-whistle:

many thp engines had oil issues until somewhere in 2009 (and all thp's of 2007)
newer models have this problem fixed
they still ask for oil but nothing to worry about
i make 8-9000 km per year and i have never checked oil level in four years

my opinion just go for it, its the best looking car while juke is one of the worst....

Like everyone else, I would say you need to check if this car has ever had timing chain issues or the fix applied.

Likewise for some of the othe issues:
Coolant temperature sensor
Coil packs
High pressure fuel pump

You should also consider an extended warranty and confirm that the known issues will be covered (in writing).

From personal experience, my 207 gti had the timing issue (2008), my Z gt200 had a timing issue (2011) but didn't drink oil, my 2014 R had a failed temperature sensor but no timing or oil issues (nearly 30k miles).

Morning all :greetings-wavingblue:

Apologies for the late reply but I've been working away all week.
Many thanks indeed for your informed (and humorous) responses to my dilemma.

The wife definitely prefers the RCZ (and like I said b4, why wouldn't you) but the Juke remains a 'sensible option'.
Living down in Dorset means that neither cars are readily available near by so I've set up some internet searches and we'll see what crops up. Won't buy an RCZ unless it's had the chain upgrade and it appears the Mini oil thirst may have been addressed for RCZ (207 GTi's suffered early on as well).

Cheers again, and I'll let you know how we get on.
