Replacement RCZ Petrol or Diesel?

A

Hello all, I’m new to the group and looking advice. Had my RCZ stolen and wrecked last week. Was a 2014 petrol and I loved it. Now looking for a replacement. My RCZ was developing the engine rattle and it has put me off getting another petrol model. Was there certain years or models that had this problem? Some mention in other forums on this site about the diesel being a good engine. Insurance paying out within the next day or so and keen to get mobile again. I’m in Northern Ireland so have limited choice. Would really appreciate advice. Many thanks, Mark

I have a 2014 diesel, and am very pleased with her.
Whilst I have had quicker motors in my over fifty years of motoring, the HDI RCZ is no sluggard and cruises quietly, comfortably and economically.
La Gata Negra is just a big pussy cat, but has sharp claws when needed.

I have the diesel version and my brother has the petrol, I felt very little if any difference in performance. I do a lot of miles in mine so works out better for me. I've got over 100k and going strong. I would also suggest test driving both.

Diesel are supposed to be just as good, etc. but I wouldn't have one myself. It's a bit like having a Porsche 911 in brown isn't it...

I have a 200.
My previous car was a 508 GT. Which is 204 bhp, slightly more than an rcz.
The 508 felt more muscular, mainly due to the 400 plus nm of torque, it would just go without any bother, but the RCZ feels faster.

More lively and thrilling to drive.
Drive as it should be (round into the red bit) a 200 is a quick car.

The facelift model or mk2 which came along in 2013 was supposed to have modified parts which were less likely to develop the timing chain tensioner issues.
I have heard of the odd one having that problem, but generally speaking it was restricted to the mk1.

Mine is a 2013 (63 plate) 200 GT and so far, it’s been sweet as a nut. I can’t fault the performance or equipment level. I think it depends on your expected usage whether a diesel would be recommended. Short trips, low annual mileage etc don’t suit the diesel, so something to bear in mind when choosing.

No it is not!
You don't see it from the outside and it performs better than a 156 and has superior economy and reliability.
If you make the miles it's a no brainer really...

Steady on, just my personal opinion!

Performs better and has better reliability than the petrol version? Nope! It's only got 163bhp because the engine's so heavy...

Superior economy? Only if you do a lot of motorway driving and long journeys.

I guess if you want to add toxic pollutants to the environment and worry about resale values, it's a no brainer really... ;)

I wouldn’t let the prospect of a petrol version developing problems put you off, yes the diesel variant may be on the whole more reliable but you have to find the right car for you petrol or diesel, condition, history mileage etc. As far as the timing chain goes MK1 or MK2 oil level and quality is all important and even the revised kit will fail if poor oil is used or you let the level get low. As a specialist on these engines once told me if the low oil level light comes on it’s too late! And some of these engines do use more oil than you would think.

The low oil light certainly was on at one stage on my last car!! Had another problem. On occasions when accelerating, the rear wheels seemed to jerk/jump and two loud metallic claps could be heard. Anyone ever experience similar?

Sounds like suspension/mounts.

I have had the odd loud bang when accelerating very hard, but I thought it was just the sound barrier ;) :eusa-whistle:

I have the HDi RCZ and the RCZ-R.
The HDi is over 5 years old (from new) with 60k on it and love it.
Not had any engine mechanical issues with the diesel.
The RCZ-R is coming up to 3 years old had a couple of EML's (High Pressure fuel pump) in the last few months! (from new),
but love them both, I do prefer the HDi though.

To be fair, I wouldn’t have a diesel anything.

It’s not because of any presumed lack of power, it’s not because of the noisier engine, it’s not because of the increased emissions, it’s not because of the greasier fill ups, it’s just, I don’t like diesels. Also, my driving style doesn’t really fit in with diesel driving, I do many short trips, and I know this would be an issue.

If I was forced to have a diesel car, then it would be a diesel RCZ.

I know they’re quick, and I know you can’t really hear any real difference when driving the car other than at tick over, & I know the engine is far more reliable than the petrol versions, but I kind of see what 2retro means, it’s a bit like putting a tow bar on a Z, or a bike rack, I just don’t think the car suits a diesel, but I would never try to impose my opinion on anyone & I’m very happy for anyone who has a diesel Z and likes it

OK!
La Gata Negra is upset and snarling.
The bus is sulking big time.
The Purple People Eater is smirking.
Of the three, which is the biggest pain pulling away and tackling the hills and dips around here?
PPE has to be revved to pull away and gears selected up and down for changes in incline.
LGN and Bus just take all in their stride.
So I am a lazy old git and provided the emission levels meet the required standards, don't give a bu99er on people turning their nose up when they discover LGN is an oil burner.
None are BROWN, though!
Just to be fair and introduce a bit of balance: the FIAT 500C with Multijet diesel motor, that was our runabout preceding the 108, was a pain in the proverbial because it hated being a runabout!
Every so often the DPF light would come on, and we would have to go for a fifteen minute run to clear out the bl00dy thing!
Never had a prob with the four Pug diesels we have had so far.

I know another member posted that they had exactly that issue with the rear but can’t remember if they sorted it if you try searching the posts you may find it but it was probably a couple of years ago.

For me I just love the shape of the RCZ and since they all share the same overall shape, I would have a diesel if my driving warranted it. I have had about 8 or 9 diesels - all french and loved everyone of em. I do have the R and did have the 200, but for me it's what you want that suits, so just get what your heart tells you - they're all good...
