Removal of RT6

Hi Guys,

So I am trying to work out how to rip the RT6 out of my car and replace it with an after market system and i am wondering how exactly the best way to go about this is.

The guy I have had look at doing this though has said i will lose some functionality.

- The screen will now be defunct, never to open again
- I will not be able to set the dash clock
- I will not be able to set the vehicular settings such as DRL, Guide me Home lights and other such stereo based settings. Basically anything that requires the screen to configure as the stalk controls will be remapped to a new stereo and existing functionality lost.
- I will lose parking sensor display, i can retain audio beep

I will however be able to keep:
- Trip computer/Dashboard displays
- Stalk controls (on new stereo)
- Cruise control/Speed limiter

I have seen a few threads of people doing things to their stereos but i couldn't find anything about the RT6. I have heard possibilities of mounting the old stereo somewhere to still be able to do the lost functions above, however i cannot figure out how to do this due to the fact the screen cable is very short, I'm not sure cutting & splicing is a good idea on such a cable.

Does anyone have any experience removing an RT6 and upgrading? Or similar issues with having to remount the stereo (i assume the NG4 has similar issues)

Thanks.

Hi!
I haven't replaced my system (not RT6) yet but I'll do it next spring. I do not have the pop up screen but I'll buy me one of them many double din units. as far as I have read and seen for me everything will be kept intact as there are adapters etc to maintain full functionallity.
I have seen replacement cables for your screen on ebay so if you wanna go that way you can always try. Hopefully someone else has info for you but from what I have read around here it seems not many people have replaced their systems with aftermarket ones.

I know a couple of streets in Grimethorpe where they will have it out in no time if you park there :eusa-whistle:

Alternatively, if Grimethorpe is busy Cudworth or Athersley would be happy to help.

i think you're a brave soul. you are potentially about to lose a lot of the functionality of the RT6 and the dashboard appeal of that pop up screen. i think that is why not a lot of people have undertaken to install after market systems. however i wish you well and look forward to reading more about your progress

If you search the forum, others have replaced their systems and kept alot of functionality.
I did, i could mostly find people replacing rd5 WITH and RT6 or ripping out an RD5 or ND4, i couldn't find anything on getting rid of the RT6.

I wish there was another way, but converting speaker wire to rca and then attempting to run 2x 1500w RMS subs, a 800w rms set of components and a 800w set of 6x9's results in shit audio up loud. It just goes "furry". I cant get good quality sound out of a conversion kit :(

I have contemplated removing the screen in the dash and replacing it with another an reusing the casing/motorworks (if possible) and essentially replacing the whole system with a new one. I just dont know how to get around the stuff in the car the stereo configures.

Can anyone help with some links? I seem to be getting lost in the wrong posts.

I thought there was one person who removed the rt6 and put a double din stereo and sat Nat unit in

So i have been talking with my Install Engineer and we have come up with 3 options:

- Use a digital Sound Processor such as an Audison Bit One: Downside; very expensive (£500-600) - am also not convinced would actually help and i would still have the crappy RT6 stereo
- Remount the old stereo somewhere: Downside - if i want to configure the car or anything to do with the stereo, i will likley have to pull over to do it. REAL downside: The cable that runs from the headunit to the RT6 screen isa very short and would need extending. I have no clue what this cable contains, if its splicable and my guy basically said the only way to know is to cut it open and see. Has anyone spliced the video cable for the RT6??
- The final option is to use a second single din unit. Disconnect the old stereo from the speakers and pipe the audio input into the second units aux (allowing to continue using the first units audio via the aux input of the second stereo. Audio quality will be shit, but its only for Sat nav or parking beeps (they may actually be on new stereo anyway since there appears to be a converter). Downside: It will look a little shit, it seems like a crazy workaround for a simple problem

I am not sure what the best option is, im thinking probably #2 but i really dont want to cut the cable unless i am sure. Can anyone help advise?

I don't know the answers you seek I'm afraid but, just as a matter of interest, why are you going to all the trouble of replacing the stereo anyway since it controls so much of the car?

I'm no audiophile and I know the factory fitted one is not BOSE quality but... it's a car stereo at the end of the day and it sounds pretty good to me. :?:

BOSE is not quality it's overpriced and tweaked shitty sound to be honest.

I'm removing it because i am a car audio enthusiast. The system I am installing is in excess of £4000 (plus fitting)

I think however i have come to the decision that for the timer being i will just buy a single din stereo and add it into the spare slot.

From there I will work out wtf to do to get a double din unit in without ruining the on board computer.

Is anyone able to recommend a high quality single din unit that has bluetooth, handsfree (compatible with existing mic etc), USB (again compatible with existing interface IF POSSIBLE), and if at all possible some for of aux in that i could patch the old stereos audio out into.

Budget is up to £600, id rather spend up to £400 if possible.
