Blue, do a search for FA series engines before even considering a GT86 or BRZ, if you think the prince engines have issues.....

Hi all' :greetings-wavingblue: ,,and I hear you tony1968 and I wish Toyota had gone it alone and simply used one of their own engines of which both I and previous JDPOWER Surveys had trust whereas the Toyota/ Subaru collaboration is a configuration mainly used by the latter and has this 'up and down piston traditionalist' not fully at ease !! I have researched the GT86 Forum etc in search of the nature of any common faults/ issues and as yet haven't found much to scare me which includes the condensating rear light lenses :helpme:

I agree with the comment about the Scirocco. It looks outdated. It's in dire need of a revamp I think.

Not particularly keen on the GT86. The design looked dated when it was first released. It's retro in its looks - but not for me.

I considered a few different cars when trying to fuel my desire for more speed. Astra GTC VXR, Mini Coupe John Works, Golf R to name but a few but for me at least, the design of the RCZ is still eyecatchingly beautiful. Therefore, combined with the power AND the looks - there was only ever going to be one winner. Remember I had never had the same car in succession prior to the RCZ. I'm now on my third. That tells you something about my enjoyment and enthusiasm for the RCZ.

The RCZ fits my needs perfectly. Large boot space for when I need it. Rear seats for additional load space should it be required. Fuel economy which is great for a car like this. Looks. Reasonable road tax and servicing costs. Plus it's not massed produced so don't see others for weeks on end.

I couldn't be happier with my choice

I can't mention specific figures but it was 3 digits ! And honestly I didn't realise I was doing that speed.

Good news is that they were too far away to know what speed I was doing and I'd slowed down by the time they caught up with me. The nice young policeman told me to be less heavy with my right foot and I got away with a warning.

I'm absolutely ashamed as I've never been stopped by the police before. A lesson learnt I think.

RCZ1...!! Tut tut... :lol: You really were nipping on and fully embracing this new found speed obsession!! :lol: I think your husband better get you some track days for Christmas so that you can try and exorcise these demons. :lol:

I'm going to suggest that they clearly weren't able to clock your speed before you slowed. 3 figures is a straight up ban no matter how lenient the policeman. I'd say you've learnt your lesson and no harm done really. It's awfully easy to be going considerably over the limit in cars like the R but I'll bet that you'll be paying a far closer eye on that speedo from now on! :lol:

Renegade and Mrizzle - you are both spot on. It really has shook me up and yes it's very easy to reach 3 figure numbers without realising it in cars like the R. TBH I have been driving the R far more sedately than the last 2 RCZs. I don't mind just tootling along. It was one head rush, once I got on the dual carriageway to get past some slow moving cars, that was my downfall.

My first thought when I was pulled over was "how will I get to see my mum now if I can't drive?" I was on my way home from visiting her, on a journey that is a 80 mile round trip. That alone will keep me on the straight and narrow.

Ach no harm no foul on this occasion. I spent several days with the VXR driving around with the speed limiter on once I first got it home for very much the same reasons as you mentioned with the R. It's WAY too easy to find yourself comfortably travelling considerably above the limit. However, I also now know that the speedo on the VXR is out by about 10% (on the safe side) so it'll register that I'm driving at 80 odd and I can still be fairly confident that I'm avoiding fines. This is some quirk of the car as I believe that they don't recalibrate the speedo to take account of the larger 20 ins alloys. It has me wondering if RCZs have their speedos calibrated differently to take account of the different alloy sizes? Has anyone ever really checked this?

I've found mine to be slightly out compared to gps it's saying 70 while speedos reading 73mph. German build quality and all have found myself overtaking people then doing 90 in fourth without realizing it gathers speed at an alarming rate

That's closer than mine Mac. 77mph in mine is 70 on the nose. It'd be interesting to find out how accurate it is in the RCZ R.

When I've hooked up a live OBD reader and a smartphone app (Dash Command in my case) the speed read from that was always 3-4mph slower than that indicated by eithe the speedometer gauge or the central display.

From that, I'd conclude the car knows exactly how fast it's going, it just doesn't tell you.

This was on an R, btw - but I don't think that's relevant.

Now we just need to find someone who has done something similar on the smaller alloys. My suspicion is that the speedo is configured to the standard 18 inch alloys.

I beg to differ mrizzle.

What I'm saying is that there are two speeds.

The one internal to the cars systems - as read by the OBD pod (it can't fabricate the data, only read what's already present), and the one displayed to the driver.

As witnessed by the previous poster, the one displayed to the driver is always higher than the GPS speed and, by my observations, the data inside the cars systems.

If it were calibrated to 18in wheels, with the larger 19in wheels on, by your argument, the car should be travelling faster than the speedo says it is, because of the larger circumference of the bigger wheel carrying the car further for each revolution of the wheel.

However, if I've read the post about GPS readings correctly, they always say the car is travelling slower than the speedo indicates to the driver.

This would tally with my own experiences, where the OBD data also says the car is travelling more slowly than the speedo indicates.

To me, this indicates that the speedo over-reads, probably deliberately so to help drivers keep under speed limits. They probably don't like to admit it formally, so no one can rely on it and blame them when they get caught speeding.

That's true Pete. Good point. Either way, the speedos are inaccurate. I can't imagine that it is consistently only out by 3-4 mph though. I would imagine that there is a percentage of tolerance that it is "under-set" by. Say 5% (or 10% as is the case for me). This obviously means that at 77mph my true speed is 70mph. This 10% margin holds up consistently across speeds and it'd be interesting to know what the margin is for the RCZ.

Thankfully they're erring on the safe side. So as annoying as it may be it might just save your bacon some day.
