I have a 207 GTI remapped to 215 BHP and 250LBS/Ft and it goes like stink! The handling is fantastic as fastlaps.com confirms. The problem is that the press always try to compare it to the 205GTI (which I used to own) and for that reason it is always slated. Fact - the 207 GTI is quicker, handles better, drinks less fuel, and less likely to kill you if you crash it! The ride is rock hard, too hard! As for Clio 197's, every one I have come across has never been able to keep up with me on the public road.
Back to the original post, book figures show that the 207 is quicker to 60, 50-70 and 0-100 however due to the RCZ gearing it has a better top end. On the road I don't think that there would be anything in it other than how mad the driver was! Track, then the RCZ would have it due to a better chassis but again not by much and very driver dependant.
Top end on the 207 can be increased to over 155 by fitting a modified 5th gear ratio. This is available from PUG and costs £150 + fitting (2 hour job).
I love the RCZ and will probably end up in one but I just love the look on BMW/Audi drivers faces when my little shopping trolley pug pulls away from them.

I agree the 207GTi 175 was a cracking little hot hatch and very quick. I had one before the RCZ which went against my better judgement as I said I hated hot hatches. Still a fab little car although. I think the 1.6 is still asking to much to get any real good performance. I can see problems happening later in both the RCZ and 207. Time will tell. Get a 3.0 V6 under the hood and let's really see what the RCZ can do.

Yes, especially your tuned 207 GTI is faster than 205 GTI, but handles better? 207 is fast but uninspiring to drive, and has much worse ride than 205(especially at slow speeds). And 207 crucially, although neutral(more so than RCZ), does not have sharp reactions like 205(or other peugeots of that) era, and racy feel of 205 like it was made for F1 driver. So please calm down about your 207, very good car, but no polish, and especially no feel that makes you connected to it. RCZ has much better feel and ride than 207 GTI, but it is too safely set up for a Peugeot, hope that with next stronger model(245 PS), chassis will be slightly revised. I have driven RCZ Hdi and it seemed return to form for Peugeot, but it is no 205 GTI.

The 2 cars are recent peugeots that sums it up :eusa-think: my rcz is certainly no gocart far from it although the steering feels tight in the bends its slow to react to any sudden change in direction with little feel of the road.My last car felt telepathic in comparison that just put a huge grin on your face on B roads the steering and gearbox were made for each other add this to a rcz then i would certainly buy/lease another

I agree the 205 was a legend with a better ride and connections to the driver, you could feel the road through the tyres which sadly is lacking in most modern hatches these days. I will however stand by argument that the 207 GTI despite it's lack of feel still handles better I have had both and been on track days in both of them. The 205 feels better, drives better but you can still take a 207 GTI around a track quicker so long as you trust the chassis switch of the stability crap and ring it's kneck! Does it make it better? No! However and rather sadly time have moved on. I just hope that the next 208 GTI takes some of the RCZ's dynamics (and gear box), that would be a cracking car. The press however will still say it's not a 205 GTI! I Think Peugeot can't win this one unless they make it extreme which they won't as it's sales they are after.
The only hot hatch out there at the moment that compares is the clio but that revy engine just makes it too unusable on todays busy roads.
I would love to see a 2lt turbo RCZ that would be very interesting especially after some minor engine tuning.

Brutal reactions and transparency at the same time differ 205 from all modern cars(great clio 200 in comparison is for babies). That reason alone makes it better handling than 207 gti. 207 gti is excellent car, because of more sophisticated chassis it is maybe more neutral than 205(less initial understeer), but (relatively) mushy transitions on the limit(in comp. to good 205) make it forgetable. No heroics there man!
