RCZ R Variable Valve Lift shaft pinion

Hi All

I have had a beautiful red RCZ R new since Sept 2015. Covered 22k miles in the 3 years. Now have the dreaded engine warning light. It's just out of warranty. Took into Peugeot dealer where I bought it. Diagnostic report says

Found Variable Valve Lift shaft pinion worn
Requires new cylinder head Cost £4,602.35 !!

Help. Surely a pinion can be replaced without needing a new cylinder head. Peugeot say no.

Any ideas/views much appreciated. I'm no great car mechanic. But have done some bits and pieces many years ago before everything electronic came in.

Thanks

Now that is a shocking diagnosis.
Never heard of this problem on the R engine.

If the diag is true, why not taking the car to an engine specialist for a second opinion?

If you’ve had the car from new and I’m assuming fully serviced by your dealer then surely Peugeot must do the repair with so few miles covered it would be classed as not fit for purpose!
What about taking out an extended Peugeot warranty and taking it to another dealer?

This exact same thing happened to my R head - in conjunction with an hp fuel pump issue, at about 42,000 miles and 4 years of ownership (I had it from new), with full dealer service history.

Fortunately - eventually, after a long struggle - covered by warranty. Timing chain was also replaced as a precaution.

The setup of the in-head pinion is critical to engine operation. Getting it wrong can lead to premature catalyst and turbo failure, apparently.

On this basis, Peugeot don’t allow it, so recommend replacement.

Thanks for the responses. Engine warning light has not re-appeared. So shall see how it goes for a while.

Very useful info.

Please keep the engine oil level at max all the time. Do not rely on the in car display information on oil only. Dive under the bonnet and keep it at max. This is very important for the longevity of RCZ engines.

If you have had from new did you get invited to the Peugeot Warranty Extension?
If not go to Peugeot HQ and complain to them that you didn't get invited and this should be covered.
