RCZ Not Starting... Temp Sensor Issue/Location?!

Hello all,

We bought our RCZ around 6 weeks ago, and recently it has been really struggling to start. We've had a few diagnostic checks done, some have not picked up anything, and others have pointed to a Temperature Sensor issue. We think the car is thinking it is too hot (when its cold first thing in the morning) and therefore not sending enough fuel, and it won't fire. The car turns over ok, just doesn't fire into life. Battery has been charged and seems ok. We have also had the 'Stop' engine warning, temperature too high etc.

The dealership we bought it from is about 2 hours away, and keen to get it fixed myself and avoid the hassle.

I've read all the related threads on here and think I will be able to change it out. Unfortunately I cannot find it!

I have the 156 1.6 model, and followed the (much appreciated) guide on this forum - http://peugeotrczforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=8730 .

I've taken a few pictures, can any point out what I'm looking for? I was expecting it to be obvious?










Any help would be much appreciated.

Its a recall so any dealer will be able to replace it foc

Yep, they changed mine today FOC during it's 2nd service. Never given me any problems but, like Tony said, it's a product recall so let the Main Dealers do it for you for free. :thumbup:

Hi, I had a very similar problem on my second but last car (Peugeot as well.) Eventually turned out to be that the immobiliser was not disengaging correctly, so turning over but refusing to start.
Took ages to find the problem, but in the end turned out to be a really simple fix.

More likely to be the other solutions in this thread, but you never know.

Thanks all. I am reluctant to drive it any distance incase it makes it worse. Unsure what to do..

Take it to a local garage and pay for repair, or pay for a trailer to deliver it to peugeot?

I started the thread you made reference to. If you look at the photo with the two plastic duct / hoses marked with masking tape and remove them it is easy to see and replace the sensor. It is held in the top of the coolant outlet housing by a U shape clip. When fitting the new one the sensor needs to be pushed in quite firmly to compress the o ring seal and the clip slid into the groove in the sensor. It's an easy job and the sensors are also very cheap. I think I paid about £4 for mine off Ebay.

My problem turned out to be a stuck thermostat so I had to replace the whole coolant outlet housing as the thermostat cannot be replaced separately. That wasn't anything like as easy but can be done in a few hours.

Thanks for that. I was following your guide to the letter, but couldn't see it. The only thing that looked remotely similar was on the bottom, almost pointing toward the radiator, also has a gold sensor but its hexagonal rather than round. Definitely not the same fitment as the part I have (which is as you describe)

I will maybe have another look tomorrow.

So frustrating

I also bought a cheap OBD reader from Amazon and it read the fault codes

P0116 and P0118, both described as engine temperature fault. So think I am at least on the right track!

My RCZ is a 156THP 1.6 model from 2011. I guess that your RCZ is newer and they changed the coolant outlet housing and temp sensor. I believe it's basically a Mini Cooper S engine so you might get more results if you try including that in internet searches.

The annoying thing about taking your car to Peugeot is that they will insist on doing the diagnostic test for a cost of about £90 or whatever and you already have the fault codes. The OBD reader is certainly a useful bit of kit.

It sounds as though you might be covered under warranty though. Perhaps Peugeot will pick the car up if they think it's not appropriate to drive it?

Mine is also a 2011 and the pictures you have are identical to mine.

I've taken the two hoses off again, still no obvious sign of it?

I've taken a photo of the coolant outlet housing I replaced. Where the sprung clip is resting is the hole that the sensor fits into. There are four rubber hoses that connect to the housing. The photo shows the top of the housing. The large hexagonal bolt with the cross cut into it is the bleed screw. You will lose some coolant when you remove the switch but I didn't need to bleed mine - it all worked OK. Hope that helps. Cheers. Bruce.

This is a known fault. I had it with mine. It is a faulty sensor that's just needs changing. If you google the fault you are receiving you will see more info about it.
I rang my dealer and they sorted it out no problem.

Thanks all. Unfortunately that is not the same housing as my car, and the part I ordered, well it has arrived, but can't find where it goes.

I'll maybe try a local dealer and see if they can sort it cheaply
