New Speeding fines are in force from today......

So, if a driver travels 31mph up to 40mph in a 30mph zone, they can be charged between 25 per cent and 75 per cent of their weekly income.

Drivers who exceed the stated speed limit by 11mph up to 20mph will be charged between 75 per cent and 125 per cent of their wage
Major offences, which are for speed limit breaches of up 22mph and above will be charged between 125 per cent and 175 per cent of their week wage.

In addition to the variable fee motorists could land themselves with a driving offence of this nature, they could also receive between three and six penalty points.

Band A offenders can receive three penalty points on their licence, band B drivers can land themselves between four and six points, while band C offences carry a six penalty point charge.

For any motorist who has held their licence for less than two years, a band C offence is enough for them to loose their licence and face an immediate driving ban.

The standard limits used for variation is;

10% + 1mph.

But this is at the discretion of the police officer who can impose a violation, even if 1mph over the limit !

Black or White / on or off / right or wrong.

Coming from an ex biker who has ridden supersports bikes, but as you RCZers know put your fut down for an overtake and wow your at 100+

I always thought that a 10% allowance was made for equipment variables. I then saw an article on TV in the U.K. About traffic cops, and one on there said there was the usual 10% plus 2 allowance, so you would think that meant 57 in a 50 limit would be OK, but before my Sister died, she was fined for 34 in a 30 limit, so that doesn't apply across the board apparently. My Brother was also caught doing 35 in a 30 zone & had to do a "speed awareness course" which he had to pay for. This was more than the fine he could have opted to take, but he avoided points by doing the course.

One thing that stands out to me with this new "formula" for fines, the more you earn, the more you are fined, sounds OK in theory, but in practice, this means that the scroat that is charging round like a lunatic in his 18 year old lowered Saxo, and is claiming benefits, knows he will be fined sod all if he gets caught, whereas if a responsible RCZ owner accidentally does a little over the speed limit, it's going to cost him a fortune.

I got the info from one of the awareness camera vans, who originally told me 10% +2mph, but like your brother,

was clocked at 35 mph and did an awareness course to dodge the points. This was in my leaf after doing a good workout in the Z and was supposed to be cooling down! So I guess it is probably just +1mph.

Your above assumption of the scroat v z owner... I'm only on £1 hour after losses so a £60 fine for me then.

Don't forget your average scroat's additional earnings, car sales, house clearances, horticultural endeavours etc, etc

150% of someones wages for the week? what about if the person speeding is on benefits has no job no tax or insurance....i guess once again the scumbags will get let off and the wealthy/not so wealthy hard working taxpayer who just wanted a little blast up the motorway will get hit in the face to not only cover his fine but evidently cover the cost for the people who cant be bothered to pay or cant pay it.

its completely ludicrous to fine people based on income as its clearly only aimed at working taxpayers>.....i call discrimination?

i know speeding is an offence but lets face it our limits are so outdated with the demands of modern day life and modern vehicles. i think the focus should be made on education of drivers not signalling or paying attention while driving more than speeding.

This is an offence in which the fine is based on earnings.

Cannot be fair, as those who can pay are hit again and penalised for working hard and rewarded with a good salary.

Speeding offences should not and really cannot be loaded on how much a person earns. Just imagine if we used this formula for all crimes... The freckless will run riot with barely no consequences, lets face it they barely get a slap on the wrist anyway and that's now.

How many times do you see Police camera whatever, and some guy speeds away from the police, runs red lights, mounts the pavement, goes over parks, finally crashes into some poor sods parked car. he has no insurance, licence, banned for previous and gets a fine less than I would get for having no MOT !!!

But I agree entirely about the outdated limits, if you touch the fun pedal in the Z your over the limit before you've got chance to get to the slow pedal & as for stopping distances, they need to have a drive in a Z & feel the Geeez when you stomp on the middle pedal. Probably stops in less than half the stated Highway Code distances.

I think they once did an article on Top Gear about the subject, & came to the same conclusions. Trouble with the current political climate, they are more likely to lower speed limits than increase them

There was talk of uping the speed limits on motorways to 80mph, but then people would do 90 all the time.

Like you say outdated, never changed since what 1956? when introduced-folk riding around in 3 tonne Worsley Riley's with candles in the lamps !!

Now we are going the other way round, slowing the motorway to 50 mph in what is to be fair the safest roads in Europe - fact.

So, we now have a situation where a single track back lane in the country with two way traffic and low forward visibility, has a higher speed limit than a Motorway with clear views often in excess of a mile.
The lunatics are clearly running the asylum.
