RCZ Coolant Loss

Hello..

Just would like to know, has anyone had to top up their coolant through the year between services. My car is a 2014 RCZ 1.6 GT the Peugeot dealer has now told me that these cars use coolant I’m on my second 2 litre bottle since I’ve had the car with also service top ups.. I just want something to say back to them when they tell me they can’t find a leak again on my next service. It also has a burning smell that comes out of the bonnet, which is first noticed inside the car. Peugeot have said they can’t find a fault. Anyone having the same problems..??

Hi Ellie, what I’ve found is that if you top up the header tank to the high mark after a while the level seems to drop to just above the lower level mark which is just under the center seam on the header tank then I’ve found it doesn’t drop any lower than this.
However there is a common problem with these engines where the thermostat housing fails which is plastic and the sealed joints fail this will cause coolant loss. Quite an easy exchange for someone that knows what they’re doing and shouldn’t be to costly. If this is the problem I would have thought your dealer would have spotted the leak.
What I would recommend is let the level drop to just above the low level and check regularly for any further loss.
Let us know how you get on.

Thank you!! It is on its way down again so I will give that a try. The burning smell seems to happen when there’s loss that’s why I thought a leak, but again they say no fault. If anyone else does have an rcz I’d be happy for your views before my service if others don’t have a problem then it is a problem, if you know what I mean. Many thanks.

Burning smell? Sure nothing is touching the turbo or exhaust?

I wouldn’t know.. but it doesn’t happen all the time when it happens open the bonnet and the smell is very strong and yes does smell exhausty. Every time it’s happened it seems to be when there’s a lot of coolant loss but that could be coincidence.

There's was a recall notice on the temperature sensor 2 years which could be related to this problem. This potentially faulty component will be replaced free of charge by your dealer if not already done. I'm not saying it will solve the coolant loss but it could definitely be a contributing factor so should be sorted ASAP.

Thanks I will ask, think it should have been done in one of the services you’d have thought, but you never know. Thank you

As neil said above, it’s usual to have a small loss from full to near minimum marks on header tank, I have often topped mine up, but it never seems to go below that anyway. I have had mine nearly 5 years, and I still have over half my 1 litre bottle of coolant left.

If you have used the quantity you mention, there is clearly something wrong somewhere, and as you have been mentioning this to your dealer for some time, this should be covered under warranty.

I have never had a burning smell from my engine, and I have run it hard regularly.

They need to get their finger out & get it sorted. Unfortunately, this is not the first case of a Pug dealer being unable/unwilling to resolve something that is clearly a fault.

Just the reply I needed.. Now they can’t pull the wool over my eyes!! Warranty ran out in March last year and had it to them lots of times telling them I will be back after warranty if it keeps the same problems, and to cut a long story short, yes I did know they were having me over, as if waiting for warranty to run out. asked three times for paper work of work carried out under warranty. Still nothing. This car broke down a week ago wouldn’t start and only has 21000 miles on it. I know somethings wrong but they’re waiting for my money to fix it, which they won’t be getting. They either fix the problems it’s had since new or I will review them everywhere. Thank you!!

Your first course of action is to go back to your dealer armed with the information you have gained. Ask to see the service manager, be calm & firm explaining to them that you have been bringing the car in with this fault since before the warranty ran out.

Depending on their response....

You could contact Peugeot UK and give them the sequential course of events, make sure you emphasise that you reported this/these fault(s) while the car was still under manufacturers warranty, and that the dealer said they couldn’t find anything wrong. Tell them the dealer in question.

They do seem to often stand by their dealers, but they may well have a word with the dealer to get their version of events. This at least will let your dealer know that you aren’t rolling over, and that you aren’t afraid of taking things further.

It might also just get your car fixed, hopefully under the warranty that covered the fault when it was first reported.

Don’t forget to let us know how you get on.

Good luck.
