Yeah unfortunately there's a lot going around.

I was a forum administrator until recently, and I tried many things to prevent spammers from registering.
They're bots, not people, they can solve the captcha images, respond to the verification email, and even answer questions if Google already knows the answer.
What worked best for me was asking a question that Google doesn't have the answer to, although it's getting harder and harder to find one.
