I've just had a message pop up on my display in the middle of the dash - "pair with special offer" Yes or No?

No idea what this is. Has anyone else had it? I selected No as I didn't know what it was. Spooky !

It's a form of hacking via Bluetooth and the special offer I suspect is to entice you to click yes in the same way the emails do - you have won a new iPhone, click here and give us your personal details etc. etc.

But what info could they obtain or hope to from a car? Sounds really weird to me and how could they get the message to pop up in the first place

It may not be specific to the vehicle at all. If someone has a signal going out to any bluetooth compliant devices then it will try and connect to phones & cars regardless.

It's not always hacking related, mind. I remember as a student walking past a nightclub for them to push a bluetooth connection to try and promote themselves. If it wasn't so invasive and require compliance from the recipient it would be quite an innovative way of doing things

Ah yes. Not thinking, was I, it would be to do with the telephone within the car and not the car itself. I don't do technology

Some pubs in Leeds use Bluetooth to advertise special offers they have posters inside stating that its operating and instructions on how to connect via Bluetooth.

When Bluetooth first came out this was one of the envisaged uses and the shape of things to come with various info being transmitted to passerbys to entice them into the business.

I suspect that your car may have been in range of one of these but not seeing the posters and the fact that this form of advertising has proved to be unpopular it is not as common as advertisers had hoped.

I think by default I'd say no just to be safe. I don't want to risk any chance that an unauthorised service could possibly have of accessing my phone book.

Even if it was a genuine, non malicious bit of advertising (and how do you tell anyway?) it's never in your best interest, it'll just be someone wanting your money lol!

Phew. Glad I selected no. I didn't know anything like this went on. My first thought was that it was a special offer from Peugeot but instinct just said to select no. If you are unsure, don't do it.
Thanks for all your replies guys.

Peugeot doing "In Dash" advertising, " Buy One Get One Free" . Honestly come on, you cannot really think that was the case..

I actually nearly choked through laughing and fell off my chair when I read this.

Actually, it's not as daft as it may sound because I was actually going down the road where the Peugeot dealership is, when the message appeared :eusa-think: I wasn't directly adjacent to the dealership but had just turned down the road that leads to it. This is what technology is all about these days.......

What i found funny was that Ron might of thought it was the car itself a bit of a "Herbie" moment.
My strange sense of humour does not fit in, in some places.

Don't be silly Kerry. I misunderstood, I wondered how anybody could send a message to the car. I wasn't thinking that it could be a message sent to a telephone and merely displayed within the car. As most members know me and technology make strange bedfellows
